Biography

Short Description

Christophe d’Antioche, known in English as Christopher of Antioch and in Greek as Christophoros, was the Melkite (Greek Orthodox) Patriarch of Antioch in the mid-tenth century. He was of Arab Christian origin and came from Baghdad, then the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Before his elevation he served as a katib, or secretary, in the administration of the Hamdanid emir Sayf al-Dawla, whose principality of Aleppo included Antioch. The principal narrative source is the chronicle of the Melkite historian Yahya ibn Saʿid of Antioch, who presents Christopher as a man of learning, at home in both the Arabic culture of the caliphate and the Greek ecclesiastical tradition, and of notable personal piety.

In 960 the Melkite community chose him as patriarch. The see was then under Muslim political authority, yet its incumbents remained in communion with Constantinople and used the Byzantine rite. His tenure coincided with the Byzantine military resurgence under Nikephoros II Phokas, whose campaigns recovered Cilicia and brought imperial armies to the threshold of northern Syria. As head of the largest Christian community in Antioch, Christopher had to protect his flock, deal with the Hamdanid court, and avoid any appearance of collusion with the advancing empire. The sources portray him as a defender of his people rather than as a Byzantine agent, but on a contested frontier that distinction was easily lost.

Sayf al-Dawla died in early 967. In the disorder that followed, Muslim townsmen in Antioch accused the patriarch of secret correspondence with the Byzantine emperor and of preparing the city for a Greek occupation. A mob seized him and put him to death in 967. Later Melkite memory regarded him as a martyr who had died for his office and his community. Antioch itself fell to the Byzantines in 969, after which the patriarchate was reorganized under imperial auspices.

Almost nothing is recorded of his childhood, the year of his birth, or the place of his burial. No contemporary Greek vita of the usual hagiographical type survives; reconstruction depends on Yahya’s annalistic notices and on later patriarchal lists. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later Latin type, and a universal feast day or specific patronages are not securely attested in the major liturgical books. His career remains an important illustration of the exposed position of Melkite hierarchs caught between the caliphate and the empire in the tenth century.
