Biography

Short Description

The Wikidata item and Wikipedia page titled Chronological list of saints and blesseds in the 20th century is not the biography of a single holy person. It is a reference compilation that enumerates individuals whom the Catholic Church (and, in some related lists, other Christian bodies) has recognized as saints or blesseds and whose lives or deaths fall in the twentieth century. Such century-by-century lists are usually ordered by year of death and function as finding aids rather than as hagiographical narratives. They therefore have no birth year, death year, feast day, burial place, or patronage of their own.

The twentieth century is widely regarded by church historians as an age of unusually numerous martyrs and of unusually frequent official recognitions of holiness. Two world wars, the Mexican Cristero conflict, the Spanish Civil War, Nazi camps, and Communist persecutions in Europe and Asia produced large groups of Catholics and other Christians killed in odium fidei. Popes of the period, especially Pius XI, Pius XII, Paul VI, and above all John Paul II, greatly increased the number of beatifications and canonizations compared with earlier centuries. John Paul II beatified and canonized more people than any predecessor, often in groups of martyrs from Spain, Mexico, Korea, Vietnam, and the Nazi and Soviet systems.

Names that commonly appear on chronological lists for this century include Pope Pius X (died 1914), Faustina Kowalska (died 1938), Maximilian Kolbe (died 1941 at Auschwitz), Edith Stein, in religion Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (died 1942), Pio of Pietrelcina (died 1968), Josemaría Escrivá (died 1975), and Teresa of Calcutta (died 1997). Many other entries are diocesan priests, members of religious institutes, and laypeople who are little known outside their own countries or congregations. Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and other churches also commemorated holy men and women who died in the same century, but English-language chronological lists of this type remain predominantly Roman Catholic in coverage and in the technical distinction between blessed and saint.

Because the subject is a list article rather than a person, fields that apply only to an individual—gender, religious order, marriage, children, papal or patriarchal office, canonizing or beatifying pontiff—cannot be filled from historical evidence. The value of the compilation lies in gathering, by year, the names of those whom the Church has already judged worthy of public veneration, and in showing how the twentieth century’s wars and ideologies shaped the modern martyrology.
