Biography

Short Description

Saint Chrysanthus is a Christian martyr of the third century whose cult, together with that of Saint Daria, is among the early Roman commemorations of the martyrs. The Martyrologium Hieronymianum records the pair at Rome, and their names appear in other early liturgical witnesses such as the marble calendar of Naples. These sources establish the existence of a cult but give no account of the martyrs’ lives. A later Latin Passio, of uncertain date and of little historical value, supplied the biographical narrative that became standard in medieval legendaries and in subsequent hagiographical literature.

In that legendary account Chrysanthus is presented as the son of Polemius, a Roman of senatorial rank. Certain versions of the story state that the family came from Alexandria in Egypt before settling in Rome. Chrysanthus is said to have been converted to Christianity through the reading of the Gospels. His father, remaining a pagan, first attempted to dissuade him by philosophical argument and then by arranging his marriage to Daria, a woman of learning who was associated with the cult of Minerva. Chrysanthus instead converted Daria to the Christian faith. They were married, yet they agreed to live in perpetual virginity and turned their household into a place of Christian instruction. The legend further relates that they converted the tribune Claudius, his wife Hilaria, and their sons Jason and Maurus; these four were later honored as martyrs in their own right.

The Passio places the arrest of Chrysanthus and Daria in the reign of the emperor Numerian. After a series of interrogations, imprisonments, and reported miracles—including the transformation of Chrysanthus’s dungeon and the protection of Daria by a lion when she was consigned to a brothel—the couple were taken to a sand-pit (arenarium) on the Via Salaria outside Rome and buried alive under earth and stones. Their tomb became a place of pilgrimage. A basilica was erected over the cemetery on the Via Salaria that came to be associated with their names and with the cemetery of Thrason. In the ninth century relics attributed to Chrysanthus and Daria were translated to the abbey of Prüm in the Eifel; other relics have been claimed by churches in Italy and elsewhere.

The Roman Catholic Church keeps their feast on 25 October; the Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates them on 19 March. Because the Passio cannot be regarded as a reliable historical source, details such as Chrysanthus’s place of birth, his family, the precise year of martyrdom, and even the nature of his relationship with Daria remain beyond verification. What is historically secure is the antiquity of their joint veneration in Rome and the continuity of their memory in both Eastern and Western liturgical calendars.
