Biography

Short Description

Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos was a Greek Orthodox priest and archimandrite who became known as a pioneering missionary of the Orthodox Church in East and Central Africa in the second half of the twentieth century. He was born in 1903 in the village of Vasilitsi in Messenia, in the Peloponnese of Greece. His childhood was marked by loss and hardship: he was orphaned at a young age and grew up in poverty. He was drawn to the Church, entered monastic life, and was ordained to the priesthood in the Church of Greece, later receiving the rank of archimandrite. For many years he served in Greece as a preacher, confessor, and parish priest rather than as a diocesan bishop or prominent hierarch, and he developed a reputation for ascetic simplicity and pastoral zeal.

In middle age, at a time when foreign missionary work was uncommon among Greek Orthodox clergy, Papasarantopoulos became aware of indigenous Orthodox communities in East Africa, especially in Uganda, where African Christians had formed congregations and sought canonical ties with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. With ecclesiastical permission he left Greece and arrived in East Africa around 1960, already in his late fifties. He is generally regarded as the first Greek Orthodox missionary of the modern period to undertake sustained work in the African interior. He settled first among communities in Uganda and thereafter extended his activity to Kenya, Tanzania, and the Congo (then Zaire).

Living simply and often under difficult material conditions, he devoted himself to catechesis, baptism, pastoral care, and the organization of parishes. He studied local languages, including Swahili, in order to preach and to help make Orthodox worship intelligible to African congregations. He worked to bring previously independent African Orthodox groups into a regular relationship with the Patriarchate of Alexandria and to train local helpers at a time when Orthodox infrastructure in the region was still rudimentary. His journeys across East and Central Africa helped establish a missionary presence that later hierarchs of Alexandria would expand.

Papasarantopoulos was never consecrated a bishop and remained an archimandrite until his death. He died in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1972. He has not been formally canonized and has no official feast day in the Orthodox calendar, but he is remembered in Orthodox missionary literature as a forerunner of the later growth of Eastern Orthodoxy in sub-Saharan Africa. The communities with which he was associated formed part of the foundation upon which subsequent Alexandrian clergy and African Orthodox Christians continued to build in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and neighboring countries.
