Biography

Short Description

Cissa of Crowland was an Anglo-Saxon priest and hermit of the early eighth century, associated with the fenland retreat of Saint Guthlac at Crowland in the kingdom of Mercia, in what is now Lincolnshire, England. Almost everything that can be said of him with any confidence derives from the Vita Sancti Guthlaci, composed by the monk Felix around 730 to 740 at the request of King Ælfwald of East Anglia. Felix names Cissa among those who supplied him with information about Guthlac, describing him as a priest of venerable life who had lived with the saint and who afterwards inhabited Guthlac’s cell. This testimony places Cissa in the small circle of disciples who gathered around Guthlac on the isolated island of Crowland in the Lincolnshire fens.

Guthlac, a Mercian of noble or royal stock who had spent his youth as a warrior, withdrew to Crowland around the turn of the eighth century and died there in 714. Felix’s narrative shows that a modest eremitical community formed around him. Cissa’s later occupation of Guthlac’s own cell indicates that he was regarded as a spiritual heir to the founder. Felix was writing while Cissa’s memories were available as a living source, which suggests that Cissa’s floruit belongs to the first half of the eighth century. No contemporary charter, chronicle, or calendar records Cissa’s parentage, the place or date of his birth, or the year of his death.

Later writers expanded Cissa’s role. Orderic Vitalis, in the early twelfth century, listed Cissa among the early hermits of Crowland, together with Tatwine, Guthlac’s attendant, and other companions. The Historia Croylandensis, the so-called Crowland Chronicle long associated with the name of Abbot Ingulf but in fact a later medieval compilation containing much legendary and forged material, presents Cissa as the second abbot of Crowland, successor to Guthlac in a fully organized monastery. Modern scholarship treats this picture with caution. In Guthlac’s lifetime Crowland was a hermitage rather than a large abbey, and the Benedictine monastery of Crowland was effectively a tenth-century refoundation after the disruptions of the Viking age. The later Crowland community had a strong interest in demonstrating an unbroken succession of holy abbots from the age of Guthlac, and Cissa’s name served that purpose.

Cissa remained a figure of purely local cult. He was remembered at Crowland among the early saints of the house, but he did not acquire a widely observed feast day in the calendars of the English church, nor is he associated with particular patronages of places, trades, or causes. No reliable source records a formal canonization, which in any case would have been anachronistic for an eighth-century Mercian hermit whose sanctity was recognized by local veneration. His historical importance lies in the glimpse he affords of the eremitical circle around Guthlac and in the way later monastic historians of Crowland used his name to link their abbey to the golden age of Mercian asceticism.
