Biography

Short Description

Claire de Castelbajac was born in Paris in 1953 into the noble de Castelbajac family, of old Gascon lineage. Although she entered the world in the capital, much of her childhood and adolescence was spent in southwestern France, on family lands in the Gers associated with the village of Laas. She was baptized and raised in the Roman Catholic Church. Accounts of her early years describe a spirited, affectionate, and sometimes headstrong girl rather than a child of precocious piety. Like many of her generation in postwar France, she received a conventional religious education while also living through the cultural shifts of the 1960s and early 1970s.

In adolescence her faith became more personal. After a period of searching she took up a more demanding Christian life, marked by regular prayer, the sacraments, and a wish to belong entirely to God, without entering a convent or religious congregation. She remained a laywoman and sought her vocation in study and work. Drawn to beauty and to the Christian artistic heritage, she trained in the restoration of paintings. In 1974 she went to Rome, where she worked on the conservation of artworks and shared the life of other young Catholics in the city. Letters and notes from this period show a young woman trying to live an intense interior life—Eucharistic devotion, Marian prayer, and attention to the will of God—without withdrawing from friendship, culture, or professional effort. She spoke of joy as a fruit of faith and of ordinary daily duties as the place of sanctification.

At Christmas 1974 she returned to her family in France. In January 1975 she was stricken with rapidly progressing viral meningoencephalitis, was hospitalized in Toulouse, and died there on 22 January 1975, at the age of twenty-one. Those who attended her in her last illness later testified to her gentleness, her concern not to trouble others, and her abandonment to God. She was buried at Laas in the Gers, in the region that had shaped her youth.

After her death, family, friends, and priests collected her correspondence and spiritual notes. These writings, with the memories of those who had known her, presented a short life offered to God in cheerfulness and simplicity, in the ordinary settings of family, study, and work. Toward the end of the twentieth century the Archdiocese of Toulouse opened a diocesan inquiry into her life, virtues, and reputation for holiness; she is styled Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized. In French Catholic circles she is invoked as a witness to holiness for young laypeople and as an example of Christian joy in late-twentieth-century ordinary life.
