Biography

Short Description

Clare of Rimini, known in Italian as Chiara Agolanti or Chiara da Rimini, was a Franciscan tertiary of the late medieval Romagna whose memory was preserved by a local cult and later Roman confirmation. Traditional accounts place her birth at Rimini in 1282, in a family of some standing, commonly identified as the Agolanti. She was married while still young and, according to the later legend, spent the years of her marriage in a worldly and self-indulgent manner typical of urban elites in a city then passing under the rising power of the Malatesta. After her husband’s death she continued for a time in the same way of life, until a religious conversion redirected her remaining decades toward penance, poverty, and charity.

Hagiographical sources describe the conversion as sudden and interior. One widely repeated episode has her hearing, while in church, an inner or supernatural summons to prayer and amendment of life. Thereafter she disposed of much of her property, took the habit and rule of the Third Order of Saint Francis, and undertook severe bodily austerities, including fasting, night vigils, and rough clothing. She is said to have gone on pilgrimage to Assisi and to other Italian shrines, sometimes in the public manner of a penitent. In Rimini she gathered companions and established a house of women living under Franciscan inspiration, combining withdrawal for prayer with care for the poor and the sick of the city.

Fourteenth-century Rimini was marked by factional violence and the consolidation of signorial rule. Later tradition credits Clare with efforts at peacemaking and with intercession for prisoners and the afflicted. Mystical phenomena—visions of the Passion, prolonged prayer, and the gift of tears—are attributed to her in the vitae, though these cannot be independently verified from contemporary civic records. She remained a tertiary rather than a cloistered Poor Clare in the strict canonical sense, and her community reflected the flexible penitential associations common among Italian women of the Franciscan Third Order in the trecento.

Clare died in Rimini on 10 February 1346. A local cult developed around her memory. On 22 December 1784 Pope Pius VI confirmed her cultus, which in the terminology of that period amounted to beatification; she is therefore styled Blessed Clare of Rimini rather than a saint of universal canonization. Her feast is kept on 10 February. Surviving documentation is largely hagiographical and relatively late, so that many picturesque details of her early dissipation and later miracles rest on pious tradition rather than on strictly contemporary evidence. The outline of a widowed woman of Rimini who became a noted Franciscan penitent in the first half of the fourteenth century is, however, consistent across the sources that preserve her name.
