Biography

Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Saint Clarus, known in French as Saint Clair or Clair du Dauphiné and sometimes called Clarus of Vienne, was a seventh-century monk and abbot associated with the church of Vienne in southeastern Gaul, in the region later known as the Dauphiné. He is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 1 January with the notice that at Vienne in Gaul is commemorated Saint Clarus, abbot, whose life was renowned for holiness and miracles. Beyond that liturgical witness and a thin layer of later medieval tradition, no contemporary seventh-century documentation of his career survives, a situation typical of many Merovingian monastic saints whose cults were received into the martyrologies long after their deaths.

Traditional hagiographical accounts, compiled well after his lifetime, present him as a native of the Dauphiné, born of a family described as noble and pious. He is said to have received a religious formation and to have taken the monastic habit at a house dedicated to Saint Ferreolus (Saint-Ferréol) in the Vienne region. Later Catholic reference works classify him as a Benedictine, though monastic observance in Burgundian and Frankish Gaul in the seventh century was often mixed and only gradually standardized under the Rule of Saint Benedict. From Saint-Ferréol he is reported to have been called to govern the monastery of Saint Marcellus (Saint-Marcel) near Vienne, a suburban house of that ancient see.

After a period as abbot, the same traditions relate that Clarus resigned his office in order to pursue a stricter eremitical life. He is said to have died on 1 January in the year 660, a date that became conventional in martyrologies and popular Catholic handbooks, though it cannot be confirmed from records of his own century. The Roman Martyrology places his memory at Vienne. Later local devotion in the Rhône valley, including the toponym Saint-Clair-du-Rhône in the modern department of Isère, reflects the spread of his cult, but the precise place of his death and burial is not established by early independent evidence. No formal papal canonization of the later medieval type is recorded; his veneration belongs to the ancient cultus received through martyrological tradition.

Clarus of Vienne should not be confused with other saints of the same name, notably Saint Clair of Nantes, a legendary early bishop of that see, and Saint Clair of Normandy, often associated with Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, an eighth- or ninth-century figure popularly invoked for diseases of the eyes. The abbot commemorated at Vienne belongs instead to the cluster of Merovingian-period monastic holy men of southeastern Gaul, remembered for ascetic life and reputed miracles, around whom a modest legendary vita was later elaborated. The historical kernel that can be stated with caution is that of a locally venerated abbot of the Vienne region in the seventh century, whose feast remained fixed on the first day of January.
