Biography

Short Description

Saint Clarus, known in French as Saint Clair, is a priest and hermit of English origin whose cult is centered on the Norman-French locality of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. The lives that survive are medieval and legendary rather than contemporary, so almost every biographical particular must be treated as tradition. Those accounts agree that he was born in England, of a family of some standing, received priestly ordination, and left his own country. A desire for a stricter life and, in the legend, the need to escape a woman's persistent advances are given as the motives for his crossing to the Frankish mainland. No reliable source records a year or town of birth; later writers sometimes name Rochester, but that detail is not independently verified.

Once in Gaul he is said to have stayed in more than one place, including the region of Rouen, before settling as a hermit in a wooded stretch of the Vexin along the river Epte, on the Neustrian borderland. There he lived in poverty and prayer. The same hagiographical cycle relates that a noblewoman, sometimes presented as the person from whom he had already fled in England, again sought him out, was refused, and in revenge sent two retainers who beheaded him. Later retellings add the cephalophoric motif, claiming that the dead hermit carried his own head. The spot of the killing and of his burial grew into a shrine and then into the village that still bears his name. That village is independently famous in political history as the site of the agreement of 911 between Charles the Simple and the Viking leader Rollo.

No reliable source records the year of his death. Later tradition offers dates in the later ninth century, commonly 894 and sometimes in the 870s, but these figures cannot be confirmed. His feast is observed on 4 November. Because his Latin name means clear or bright, popular devotion associated him with healthy sight: he is invoked for the blind and for those suffering from diseases of the eyes, and he is the patron of the commune of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. He was a priest and hermit, not a member of a later named religious order. The tradition presents him as unmarried and childless. He held no episcopal see and was never pope or patriarch. His canonization belongs to the era of local cult and liturgical reception rather than to a formal papal process, and the names of any beatifying or canonizing authority are not recorded.

The historical Clarus, if a single person stands behind the legend, remains obscure. What can be said with confidence is that a cult of a martyred hermit named Clarus was established on the Epte, that it was strong enough to give a lasting name to the settlement, and that medieval liturgical books in northern France commemorated him on 4 November. Other saints of the same name, including an abbot of Vienne commemorated on 1 January and an early bishop of Nantes, are distinct figures and should not be conflated with the English hermit of the Vexin.
