Biography

Short Description

Claudius of Vienne (known in French as Claude de Vienne and in Catalan as Claudi de Viena) was an early bishop of the Christian community of Vienne, the Roman city of Vienna on the Rhône in southeastern Gaul. He is honoured as a saint in the Catholic Church. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary evidence. His name survives chiefly in later episcopal catalogues of the church of Vienne and in martyrological notices that treat him as one of the early shepherds of that see. Popular hagiographical compilations often place him in the third century and sometimes assign his death to the year 254, but those dates are traditional rather than demonstrable from inscriptions, conciliar lists, or other documents of his own age.

Vienne was among the principal cities of Roman Gaul and became an important Christian centre. Later medieval writers, above all Archbishop Ado of Vienne in the ninth century, constructed a long and partly legendary succession of bishops beginning with Crescens, whom they identified with the companion of the apostle Paul. Critical study of the Gallic episcopal lists has shown that the earliest names and dates must be treated with great reserve. Claudius is not among the bishops of Vienne who can be anchored to a firmly dated event. The bishop of Vienne who took part in the Council of Arles in 314 was Verus, not Claudius, and the first bishops of the see who emerge in a clearer historical light belong to the later fourth and fifth centuries, among them figures such as Mamertus, famous for the institution of the Rogation processions. Claudius therefore belongs to the poorly documented earlier stratum of the diocesan memory.

No trustworthy information has been preserved concerning his birth, family, education, or the specific acts of his episcopate. There is no surviving sermon, letter, or administrative document in his name, and no early passion or vita that would indicate martyrdom or a particular manner of death. He should not be confused with the far better-known Saint Claude of Besançon (Claudius of Condat), a seventh-century abbot and bishop whose cult, centred on the Jura and the abbey of Saint-Claude, generated a rich later tradition. Nor should he be identified with Claudius of Turin, the ninth-century bishop noted for his opposition to images. The Claudius associated with Vienne is a distinct, much more obscure figure.

His veneration is that of an ancient local bishop whose name was retained in the liturgical memory of the church. Modern calendars of saints commonly give 1 June as his feast day. Like most saints of the first Christian centuries in Gaul, he was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the type that developed in the later Middle Ages; his cult is pre-congregational. No extensive list of patronages—of cities, trades, illnesses, or social groups—is securely attached to him in the historical record. The honest conclusion of a careful enquiry is that Claudius of Vienne is remembered as an early bishop-saint of the Rhône valley, while the biographical details that would fill out a life remain beyond recovery.
