Biography
Claudio Granzotto was born Riccardo Granzotto on 23 August 1900 in Santa Lucia di Piave, in the province of Treviso in the Veneto region of northern Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. He was the youngest of nine children in a poor rural family. His father died in 1909, when Riccardo was nine, and the household was left in hardship. He received only a limited formal education and from an early age worked to support his mother and siblings, first as a farm labourer and later as a carpenter and woodworker. Even under these conditions he showed a clear gift for drawing, carving, and modelling.
After military service in the period of the First World War he was able to pursue sculpture more seriously. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and completed his training there in 1929, gaining recognition for work that already favoured sacred subjects and a sober, expressive style. For several years he practised as a sculptor while discerning a religious vocation. In 1933, at the age of thirty-three, he entered the Order of Friars Minor, receiving the religious name Claudio. He made temporary profession in 1935 and solemn profession in 1937. He was never ordained a priest and remained a lay brother whose principal work in the order was sculpture.
As a Franciscan he lived in communities in the Veneto, including the convent at Chiampo in the province of Vicenza. He produced numerous statues and other works of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints for churches and religious houses, carrying out this labour in a spirit of poverty and obedience. Those who knew him described him as humble, prayerful, and ready to serve others. In the mid-1940s he developed severe neurological symptoms that were diagnosed as a brain tumour. He underwent treatment in Padua and accepted his illness with patience and faith.
He died in Padua on 15 August 1947, the feast of the Assumption, at the age of forty-six. He was at first buried at Chiampo; his remains were later transferred to the parish church of his native Santa Lucia di Piave, which became a place of local devotion. A cause for beatification was introduced, and on 20 November 1994 Pope John Paul II declared him blessed in Saint Peter's Square. The Catholic Church commemorates Blessed Claudio Granzotto on 15 August. He is remembered as a twentieth-century Franciscan brother and artist who joined creative work with consecrated life.
