Biography

Short Description

Claudius of Besançon, known in French as Saint Claude and sometimes called Claude of Condat or Claude the Thaumaturge, was a seventh-century priest, monk, abbot, and bishop associated with Besançon and the Jura monastery of Condat. His career is known almost entirely from later medieval hagiography rather than from contemporary charters or chronicles. Traditional accounts state that he was born at Salins, in the present-day French Jura, into a Gallo-Roman family of senatorial rank in the early seventh century. After an education at Besançon he was ordained priest and served in that city before withdrawing to the monastery of Condat, also called Saint-Oyend-de-Joux, in the Haut-Jura. That house had been founded in the fifth century by Romanus and Lupicinus, the Jura Fathers, and remained one of the principal monastic centres of the region.

At Condat, Claudius became abbot. Later writers credit him with strengthening observance and extending the influence of the monastery. In the later seventh century he was elected bishop of Besançon. Hagiographic tradition assigns him an episcopate of some seven years, after which he resigned the see and returned to Condat to live again as a monk. Exact years for his consecration and retirement are not fixed by seventh-century evidence; later reconstructions have placed his time as bishop in the 680s and early 690s.

He died at the monastery on 6 June. Local and martyrological tradition gives the year as 696 or 699. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage, and he acquired a reputation as a miracle-worker. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries a solemn translation of his relics greatly increased the shrine's fame; the monastery and the town that grew around it took the name Saint-Claude. Medieval witnesses described the body as incorrupt. In 1794, during the French Revolution, the relics were publicly burned.

Historians have observed that the received vita may combine more than one person named Claudius—an abbot of Condat and a bishop of Besançon—and that almost no contemporary documentation survives. What is well attested is the vigour of his cult in Franche-Comté from the High Middle Ages, the renaming of Saint-Oyend as Saint-Claude, and the celebration of his feast on 6 June, as recorded in the Roman Martyrology. He is the patron of the town of Saint-Claude. In later centuries artisans of that town, noted for woodturning, toys, and pipes, also regarded him as their patron.
