Biography

Clelia Merloni was born in 1861 in Forlì, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, into a family of means. Her father Gioacchino Merloni was a businessman; her mother died when Clelia was still a small child, a loss that marked her early years. She received a solid education for her social class and from youth cultivated a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus together with a desire to serve the poor and abandoned children. After a brief attempt at religious life in an existing congregation, which she left because of fragile health, she discerned a call to found a new community of women dedicated to apostolic works of education and charity.

In 1894 she established the Congregation of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Viareggio. The sisters devoted themselves to teaching, orphanages, and assistance to the needy, spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart. The institute grew rapidly until a financial collapse, caused by fraudulent mismanagement of its resources by a cleric associated with the community, brought it to the brink of ruin. Ecclesiastical authorities removed Merloni from leadership. From the early years of the twentieth century until 1928 she was obliged to live apart from the congregation she had founded, residing in various places in Italy in poverty, obscurity, and humiliation. She accepted the long trial without public self-justification, regarding it as a share in the sufferings of Christ.

Only in 1928 was she permitted to rejoin the community. She spent her final years at the congregation’s house in Rome and died there in 1930 after years of declining health, including diabetes, which she bore with patience. The Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus survived the earlier crisis, recovered, and later expanded to numerous countries while remaining faithful to her original charism of education and charity.

The cause for her beatification proceeded in due course. Pope Francis recognized her heroic virtues and declared her Venerable in 2016. A miracle attributed to her intercession was approved, and she was beatified on 3 November 2018. Blessed Clelia Merloni is remembered as a foundress who persevered in humility, forgiveness, and trust in divine providence amid misunderstanding, unjust accusation, and apparent failure.
