Biography

Short Description

Cleophas (also rendered Cleopas; Greek Kleopas) is a New Testament figure named in the Gospel of Luke as one of two disciples who, on the day of Jesus’s resurrection, were walking from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. According to Luke 24:13–35, the risen Jesus joined them unrecognized, interpreted the scriptures concerning the Messiah, and was recognized only in the breaking of bread, after which he vanished. The two then returned to Jerusalem and reported the encounter to the Eleven. The companion walking with Cleophas is not named in the Gospel. The Emmaus narrative is one of the principal resurrection-appearance stories in Luke and became a major subject of Christian preaching, liturgy, and art. No New Testament text records Cleophas’s birth, parentage, occupation, or later career, and no ancient source supplies a verifiable year of birth or death.

A separate Johannine notice (John 19:25) mentions Mary the wife of Clopas (Greek Klōpas) among the women standing near the cross. Whether Luke’s Cleopas and John’s Clopas are the same person has been debated since antiquity: the Greek spellings differ, but many later writers treated them as identical. The second-century author Hegesippus, as quoted by Eusebius of Caesarea in the Ecclesiastical History, identified Clopas as a brother of Joseph, husband of Mary the mother of Jesus, and as the father of Simeon (Symeon), who succeeded James as bishop of the church in Jerusalem and was described as a cousin of Jesus. On that reconstruction Clopas would have belonged to Jesus’s wider family and to the early leadership circle in Jerusalem. A further traditional identification, associated especially with Jerome, equated Clopas with Alphaeus and thus made James son of Alphaeus a son of Mary of Clopas. These identifications remain matters of patristic and scholarly dispute rather than established historical fact, and they cannot be used to assign a verified spouse or children to the Emmaus disciple without circularity.

Later martyrological tradition, reflected in medieval martyrologies and in the Roman Martyrology, commemorates Cleophas as a disciple of the Lord associated with Emmaus and relates that he was slain by opponents of the Christian message in the same house in which he had received the Lord, and that he was buried there. That account of a violent death is not found in the New Testament or in the early historians such as Eusebius and cannot be independently verified; it belongs to the hagiographical development of his cult. In the Roman Catholic tradition he has been commemorated on 25 September. In the Eastern Orthodox Church Cleopas is numbered among the Seventy Apostles and is commemorated on 30 October and, with the rest of the Seventy, on 4 January. No reliable source records a precise place of birth, a historically confirmed place of death, or a verified burial site.

Because the historical evidence is limited to the Lukan narrative, a brief Johannine notice of a similarly named Clopas, and later ecclesiastical tradition, modern historians treat most details of a full biography as uncertain. What can be said with confidence is that the Emmaus story made Cleophas a lasting symbol of discipleship, of the interpretation of scripture in light of the resurrection, and of recognition of Christ in the eucharistic breaking of bread. His name was retained in liturgical calendars of both East and West, and the Emmaus episode has been continuously read, preached, and depicted from late antiquity to the present.
