Biography

Short Description

Saint Collen (also found as Colan or Gollen) is a Welsh saint of the early medieval period, conventionally placed in the seventh century, whose name survives in the town of Llangollen in Denbighshire in north-east Wales. The Welsh place-name means church of Collen, and the medieval parish church there is dedicated to him. Dedications also occur elsewhere in Wales and at St Colan in Cornwall, which indicates that a cult of Collen was known beyond a single valley. No contemporary charter, chronicle, or inscription records his life. What later ages related about him comes from medieval hagiography, church dedications, and local tradition, and must be treated as legend shaped around a genuine early commemoration rather than as a verifiable biography.

The chief narrative source is the Welsh Buchedd Collen (Life of Collen), preserved in late medieval manuscripts and of little independent historical authority. In that Life, Collen is given a princely Welsh pedigree, being attached to the line of Caradog Freichfras. He is said to have studied on the Continent, including a stay in France, and to have visited Rome before returning to Britain. The same text associates him with Glastonbury, where he is described as living as a monk or hermit. These travels and the Glastonbury episode belong to the legendary layer of the tradition; they cannot be confirmed from earlier or external evidence, and they follow a pattern common in later Lives of Celtic saints, which often send their heroes to Rome or to famous monasteries in order to enhance prestige.

The best-known story in the Life is Collen’s encounter with Gwyn ap Nudd, the otherworldly ruler of Annwn and of the Tylwyth Teg, the fairy host of Welsh tradition. Invited to a magnificent feast on a hill—identified in some tellings with Glastonbury Tor and in others with Dinas Brân above Llangollen—Collen refused the hospitality of the otherworld, sprinkled holy water, and caused the palace and its company to vanish. The tale belongs to a wider body of Insular Christian stories in which a saint confronts or banishes pagan or fairy powers. After this episode, tradition holds that Collen settled in the valley of the River Dee and founded the church that gave Llangollen its name. He is typically presented as a hermit or monastic founder rather than as a bishop or secular lord, and no reliable source attributes a wife or children to him.

Collen’s feast is kept on 21 May. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern kind; his sanctity rests on local cult and long-standing commemoration in Wales. He is regarded as the patron saint of Llangollen. Because the written Life is late and heavily legendary, historians accept little more than that a holy man named Collen was honoured in the Dee valley by the early Middle Ages and that his cult left a lasting mark on Welsh and Cornish church dedications. Precise dates of birth and death, a documented birthplace, and a verified burial are not preserved in sources that can be independently checked.
