Biography

Short Description

Saint Colmán of Dromore, also known by the Irish pet-name Mocholmóc, was a sixth-century monastic founder and bishop in the north-east of Ireland. He is traditionally identified as the first abbot of the monastery of Dromore on the River Lagan in County Down and as the first bishop of the church that later became the Diocese of Dromore. Almost nothing about him can be verified from contemporary records. The notices that survive belong to genealogies, martyrologies, and later hagiography, and they must be used with caution because the name Colmán was borne by a great many early Irish saints, whose identities were easily confused.

Later tradition states that he studied first under Saint Ailbe of Emly and afterwards with Saint Coelan on Inis Cealtra in Lough Derg. These educational links, whether historical or constructed, associated the founder of Dromore with well-known Munster and midland churches. He is then said to have established his own community at Dromore in the territory of the Uí Echach Cobo. In the manner of the early Irish church he combined the roles of abbot and bishop. The monastery became the nucleus of a local church whose episcopal succession claimed him as its origin.

Miracle stories attached to his name, including the raising of a dead child, are typical of Irish saints' lives and cannot be treated as historical evidence. Irish calendars, notably the Martyrology of Óengus, assign him the feast of 7 June, which is still observed. He is the patron saint of the Diocese of Dromore; the Catholic cathedral of that diocese, built in Newry in the nineteenth century, is dedicated to him.

The precise years of his birth and death are unknown. Later writers have sometimes suggested a death about 600 or 610, but these dates rest on convention rather than annalistic testimony. He is believed to have died and been buried at Dromore. His cult remained local. Like other early Irish saints he was not the subject of a formal papal canonization; his place in the calendar derives from immemorial liturgical veneration. Modern scholarship underlines both his obscurity and the enduring importance of his patronage for the church of Dromore.
