Biography

Short Description

Coloman (Hungarian: Kálmán; known in Slavic sources as Koloman) was a prince of the Árpád dynasty, born in 1208 as the second son of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Merania. His elder brother was the future King Béla IV; his sister Elizabeth, later canonized, married Louis IV of Thuringia. Through his mother he was connected with the Andechs-Merania family of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1213, while Coloman was still a small child, Queen Gertrude was assassinated by a group of Hungarian magnates, a crisis that shaped Andrew II’s later reign. Coloman grew up at a court marked by his father’s crusade to the Holy Land in 1217–1218, generous grants to incoming nobles, and repeated Hungarian intervention in the Ruthenian principalities of Halych and Volhynia.

In 1214 Andrew II and Duke Leszek the White of Poland agreed to install the child Coloman in Halych and to marry him to Leszek’s daughter Salomea. Hungarian forces occupied the principality and the young couple were placed there. With papal consent Coloman was crowned king of Galicia, and Hungarian royal titulature also associated the claim with Lodomeria (Volhynia). The coronation was meant to create a Latin Christian royal title on the eastern edge of the Hungarian realm and to justify hereditary Árpád rule. In a land whose elites were largely Orthodox and accustomed to Rurikid princes, the arrangement met strong resistance. Rival claimants, including Mstislav Mstislavich and Daniel Romanovich, fought the Hungarians. Coloman’s first tenure was interrupted by expulsion; a further Hungarian-Polish intervention restored him for a time. In the fighting of about 1219–1221 he and Salomea were taken prisoner. They were later released, but Coloman’s kingship in Galicia ended. The episode did not establish lasting Árpád government in Ruthenia, yet it left a dynastic claim to Galicia and Lodomeria that Hungarian, and much later Habsburg, rulers continued to assert in their titles.

After his return Coloman was provided for within the Hungarian kingdom. In 1226 Andrew II appointed him duke of Slavonia, giving him authority over Slavonia and, in practice, over Croatia and Dalmatia, provinces his brother Béla had earlier administered. As duke he issued charters, confirmed ecclesiastical and municipal privileges, and dealt with the Templars and other church institutions along the Adriatic and in the Sava basin. Thomas the Archdeacon of Split, the principal narrative source for the region in the early thirteenth century, presents him as an active and respected prince. When Béla IV succeeded Andrew II in 1235, Coloman remained duke in the south and one of the leading adult members of the royal house.

In the spring of 1241 Mongol armies under Batu Khan and Subutai invaded the Kingdom of Hungary. Coloman brought contingents from his duchies to join Béla IV. At the Battle of Mohi on the Sajó on 11 April 1241 the Hungarian army was destroyed. Coloman was severely wounded but escaped the field and withdrew toward the Slavonian lands he governed. He died of those wounds later in 1241. Hungarian and Croatian historical tradition places his death and burial at Čazma. He left no children. Salomea returned to Poland, entered the Order of Poor Clares, and came to be venerated as Blessed Salomea. Coloman’s death removed one of the few adult Árpád princes at the moment of the kingdom’s collapse before the Mongols.
