Biography

Colomba Gabriel was born Janina Matylda Gabriel on 3 May 1858 in Stanisławów, then a city of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria in the Austrian Empire and now Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine. She came from a Polish Catholic family and was the third of four children of Feliks Gabriel and his wife Matylda. Formed in the faith from childhood, she was educated by the Benedictine Sisters in Lwów (Lviv). Drawn to monastic life, she entered the Benedictine monastery in that city and made her solemn religious profession in 1882, taking the name Colomba.

In the years that followed she taught in the sisters' school and was given responsibilities of governance within her community. Toward the end of the nineteenth century serious difficulties arose over the administration of a house entrusted to her. Around 1900 she went to Rome to lay the matter before the Holy See. Pope Leo XIII received her and encouraged her to remain in the city and to devote herself to works of charity among the poor and working people of Rome.

Settling in Rome, she opened hospitality and formation for domestic servants and young women who had come from the countryside to find work, seeking to protect them from exploitation and to offer education and Christian formation. In 1908 she founded the Congregation of the Benedictine Sisters of Charity (Suore Benedettine di Carità), uniting Benedictine spiritual tradition with an active apostolate of mercy. The institute cared for girls and women at risk, for children, and for the needy; it obtained ecclesiastical approval and established further houses.

Gabriel directed the congregation until her death in Rome on 24 September 1926. She was remembered for humility, trust in Providence, and tireless service. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 16 May 1993 in Saint Peter's Square. She has not been canonized. The Catholic Church keeps her liturgical memorial on 24 September. The congregation she founded continues charitable and educational work in Italy and in other countries.
