Biography

Short Description

Columba of Rieti was born Angelella Guardagnoli on 2 February 1467 in Rieti, in the Papal States of central Italy. Traditional accounts relate that a dove appeared at her baptism, after which she was called Columba, the Latin word for dove. She belonged to the Guardagnoli family and grew up in a devout household of modest means. In the later fifteenth century the memory of Catherine of Siena still strongly shaped Dominican spirituality in Umbria, and Columba’s early life unfolded in that climate of tertiary piety, penance, and civic religion.

From childhood she was described as drawn to prayer, fasting, and works of mercy. Around the age of twelve she received the habit of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, committing herself to evangelical counsels while remaining a tertiary rather than a cloistered nun of the Second Order. Hagiographical sources emphasize visions, prolonged ecstasies, and a reputation for holiness that attracted both devotion and occasional suspicion. She is said to have lived in marked austerity, to have cared for the sick and the poor, and to have become a spiritual counselor even before leaving Rieti. Admirers compared her to Catherine of Siena, though the more miraculous claims rest largely on later legendary elaboration rather than on a large body of her own writings.

In 1488 she moved to Perugia, then a turbulent commune marked by factional violence, notably involving the Baglioni family, and by the politics of the Papal States. There she founded a community of Dominican tertiaries who lived in common. Citizens, clergy, and magistrates sought her advice; tradition credits her with prophecies concerning the city’s factions and with miracles of healing and conversion. She remained a tertiary in canonical status, yet her house functioned as a regular religious community and a center of prayer. Her public spiritual role in Perugia continued until the end of her short life, and she was regarded locally as a protectress of the city in times of plague, war, and moral crisis.

Columba died in Perugia on 20 May 1501, at the age of thirty-four. Veneration began soon after her death. Pope Urban VIII beatified her in 1626. The Catholic Church observes her feast on 20 May. She is invoked as a patron of Perugia and against sexual temptation. She remains known in Dominican and Umbrian Catholic tradition as a mystic of the Italian Quattrocento, often styled in older literature as a second Catherine of Siena, with her cult centered on Perugia and Rieti.
