Biography

Short Description

Saint Concordia is a Christian martyr of the third century, commemorated in the Roman Martyrology together with Saint Hippolytus on 13 August. In the traditional Latin hagiographical accounts she is described as the nurse (nutrix) of Hippolytus, a Roman figure whose legendary dossier later became entangled with that of the soldier-martyr of the Via Tiburtina and, in popular devotion, with the early third-century writer Hippolytus of Rome. No independent evidence survives for her parentage, birthplace, or early life. She is known only through the martyrdom narrative attached to Hippolytus and through the ancient cult that grew up around tombs on the Via Tiburtina outside Rome.

The Passio places her death in the persecution associated with the emperors Valerian and Gallienus, conventionally dated to 258, the same year in which Pope Sixtus II and Lawrence were killed. According to that account Concordia refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods and was beaten to death with leaded whips (plumbatae). Her body was then thrown into a sewer in order to deny her honorable burial. Later recensions describe the recovery of the remains—sometimes ascribed to Hippolytus before his own execution, sometimes to other Christians—and their burial in the cemetery that came to bear Hippolytus’s name. Occasional lists add nineteen companions; those names belong to the legendary expansion of the text rather than to separate documentary testimony.

Modern scholarship treats this narrative with caution. The soldier-martyr Hippolytus of the Via Tiburtina is generally distinguished from the theologian and sometime antipope Hippolytus of Rome, and the Acts that bind Concordia to the soldier are regarded as a later pious composition, shaped in part by the poetry of Prudentius and by the need to explain an already existing cult. Concordia’s place in the Roman martyrological tradition is nonetheless early: her name appears with Hippolytus in the Depositio martyrum and in subsequent recensions of the Roman Martyrology on 13 August. Relics associated with her were venerated in Rome, and in the early Middle Ages various churches north of the Alps claimed portions of them, following a common pattern of translations of Roman martyr relics.

Concordia was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her cult is that of an ancient martyr, accepted on the basis of long-standing public veneration. She is not recorded as a member of a religious order, nor is there reliable evidence that she was married or had children beyond the traditional designation of nurse to Hippolytus. No well-documented patronages of places, professions, illnesses, or social groups are attached to her in the major liturgical and hagiographical collections. Her memory is preserved chiefly in the 13 August commemoration and in the archaeology and early pilgrim itineraries of the catacomb of Hippolytus on the Via Tiburtina.
