Biography

Short Description

Saint Abundius (also Abondius, Abundias, or Abbondio) was a fifth-century bishop of Como in northern Italy, commemorated in the Roman Martyrology as bishop and confessor. He was born at Thessalonica in the early fifth century; no reliable source preserves an exact year of birth, and nothing certain is known of his family. He is remembered as a Greek-speaking cleric of theological learning who became a leading Western opponent of the Christological controversies of his time, especially Nestorianism and the teaching associated with Eutyches.

He succeeded Saint Amantius in the see of Como around the middle of the fifth century. Pope Leo I the Great sent him as papal legate to the imperial court at Constantinople to deal with the Eutychian crisis. Abundius took part in the synod held at Constantinople in 450 and is associated with the defense of the doctrine later defined at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, namely the union of two natures in the one person of Christ as set out in Leo’s Tome. Contemporary administrative detail of his mission is thin; later ecclesiastical historians and the liturgical tradition of Como are the principal witnesses to his role.

As bishop he governed the church of Como in a period of political strain in northern Italy, before the deposition of the last Western emperor. Hagiographical notices credit him with pastoral zeal and with consolidating the local church, but they do not supply a year-by-year chronicle. He died at Como on 2 April 469. He was first buried in the church of the Holy Apostles (Saints Peter and Paul) outside the walls. In later centuries his relics were translated to the Romanesque basilica that bears his name, Sant’Abbondio, which for a time served as the cathedral of Como and remains the principal shrine of his cult.

Veneration of Abundius as confessor is ancient and local rather than the product of a medieval papal canonization process; no individual canonizing or beatifying pontiff is recorded. His feast is kept on 2 April. He is the principal patron of the city and diocese of Como. Precise dates for his birth, the beginning of his episcopate, and many acts of his ministry are not attested in surviving fifth-century documents; the outline given here follows standard notices in the martyrology, the Catholic historical tradition, and the local cult at Como.
