Biography

Short Description

Saint Adelphus, also rendered Adelphe, Adelfus, or Adelphius, was a bishop of Metz in late Roman Gaul and is venerated as a confessor in the Catholic Church. Virtually nothing can be established about his life from contemporary evidence. He is known principally from later episcopal catalogues of the church of Metz, especially the Gesta episcoporum Mettensium composed by Paul the Deacon in the eighth century, which place him among the early bishops of the see, commonly as the tenth bishop after Saint Rufus. Modern historians therefore locate his episcopate in the later fourth or the fifth century, a period when Metz remained an important civitas of Belgica Prima while imperial structures in Gaul were under increasing strain. No writings, letters, or authentic acta survive, and no reliable account of his birth, family, or education exists.

In the absence of contemporary documentation, later hagiography portrayed Adelphus as a pastor who governed the church of Metz with holiness during an age of transition. The title confessor, used of him in the martyrologies, indicates that he was remembered as a saint who witnessed to the Christian faith by the integrity of his life and office rather than by a violent death. The early bishops of Metz were later associated with the apostolic legend of Saint Clement of Metz, a disciple of Saint Peter in medieval tradition; Adelphus belongs to the historical rather than the purely legendary portion of the list, yet even so the details of his administration, any synods he may have attended, and his relations with neighboring sees remain unknown. Claims of a precise year of death, sometimes given in popular works as around 450, rest on conjecture from the order of names in the catalogues rather than on dated records.

The cult of Saint Adelphus developed around his relics. In the eighth century those relics were translated from Metz to the monastery of Neuwiller-lès-Saverne (Neuweiler) in Alsace. The transfer is connected in medieval tradition with the reform activity of the church of Metz and with the foundation or endowment of the Alsatian house, which thereafter served as the chief center of his veneration. A church dedicated to Saint Adelphus was built at Neuwiller to receive the relics, and the abbey became a place of pilgrimage. Subsequent centuries saw further translations and enshrinements of the relics within that church. Because the original burial site in Metz is not described in early sources, it is presumed to have been a church of the episcopal city, possibly the cathedral or a cemetery basilica, in keeping with the practice of the time.

Liturgical commemoration of Adelphus is attested in the Roman Martyrology, which records him on 29 August at Metz as bishop and confessor. Local calendars in Lorraine and Alsace have also kept feasts associated with the translation of his relics. He has been invoked especially in the region of his shrine at Neuwiller-lès-Saverne. No extensive list of official patronages of professions or causes is securely documented in the major hagiographical collections. As with many early Gallic bishops, later legend may have added miracles and biographical episodes that cannot be verified. A careful historical account therefore confines itself to his place in the succession of Metz, the eighth-century translation of his relics, and the enduring liturgical memory of a holy bishop of the fifth-century church in Gaul.
