Biography

Short Description

The designation Confessor Albert does not correspond to one securely identified person in the standard martyrologies, synaxaria, or modern reference works. In Latin Christian usage, confessor is a liturgical title for a saint who was not a martyr but who confessed the faith by a holy life, often as a bishop, monk, hermit, or priest. Albert (Latin Albertus, from Germanic Adalbert) was a common clerical name in the High and Late Middle Ages, and several Western saints named Albert were entered in calendars simply as confessors. No Wikidata identifier, Wikipedia article, feast date, diocese, or religious order was supplied with the name, so a unique identification cannot be made. No Bishop of Rome or Coptic Pope of Alexandria has ever borne the name Albert.

Among figures who have been styled Albert the Confessor or Albert, Confessor in older books, one frequently cited is Albert of Trapani (also Albert of Sicily), a Carmelite friar associated with western Sicily in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Traditional accounts place his activity in Trapani and Messina and describe preaching, pastoral work, and a local cult later taken up by the Carmelite order. Another, far better documented, is Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus), the thirteenth-century German Dominican, bishop of Regensburg for a short period, teacher of Thomas Aquinas, and later Doctor of the Church, who appears in older Roman liturgical books as bishop and confessor. A further Italian bishop, Albert of Montecorvino in Apulia, is commemorated in some martyrologies as a confessor of the late eleventh or early twelfth century. These are distinct men with different orders, regions, and feast days; none can be equated with the bare label Confessor Albert without additional evidence.

Albert Avogadro (often called Albert of Jerusalem), a canon regular from northern Italy who became Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in the early thirteenth century and gave a rule to the hermits on Mount Carmel, is sometimes honored as a saint, but he died by assassination at Acre and is therefore not always classed as a confessor in the strict non-martyr sense. Other local cults (for example Albert of Bergamo, a Dominican tertiary) likewise used the name and the confessor title. Because the present subject is not tied to any of these cults by a reliable source, dates of birth and death, places of birth, death, and burial, religious profession, marriage or celibacy, children, canonization or beatification, and patronages cannot be stated. Filling those fields from any one candidate would be conjecture.

What can be said in general is that medieval confessors named Albert were typically Western Latin clergy or religious, that the name itself is masculine, and that Eastern patriarchal sees (Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East) are not known to have been held by a saint of this name. Beyond that, the historical record does not permit a single biography. Any precise year of birth, office-taking year, or patronage list attached to Confessor Albert without further identification should be treated as unverified.
