Biography

Short Description

Aldhelm (Old English Ealdhelm), an Anglo-Saxon scholar, abbot, and bishop, was a leading figure of learning and church life in the kingdom of Wessex in the late seventh and early eighth centuries. Later medieval writers, especially William of Malmesbury in the twelfth century, reported that he was of noble West Saxon birth and related to the royal house, possibly a kinsman of King Ine. Contemporary evidence does not record a precise place or year of birth. He was educated first at the monastic community of Malmesbury under the Irish teacher Máeldub, founder of that house, and afterwards at the school of Canterbury under Archbishop Theodore of Tarsus and Abbot Hadrian. There he acquired an unusually wide command of Latin letters, metre, Roman law, computus, and Greek, and he became one of the most accomplished scholars of early Christian England.

In the later seventh century Aldhelm became abbot of Malmesbury. Under his rule the monastery expanded in numbers, learning, and estates. He travelled to Rome and obtained a papal privilege for his community from Pope Sergius I. He founded or rebuilt churches at Malmesbury, Frome, Bradford-on-Avon, and other places in Wessex. Tradition preserved by William of Malmesbury describes him as a preacher who would stand in public places, even singing in the vernacular to gather a crowd, before turning to Christian instruction. He took part in the effort to bring the British churches of the southwest into conformity with Roman practice on Easter and the form of tonsure, addressing a letter on the subject to King Geraint of Dumnonia. The Venerable Bede, writing within a generation of Aldhelm's death, praised his learning and his book in praise of virginity.

When Bishop Haeddi of Winchester died in 705, the West Saxon diocese was divided. Aldhelm was consecrated bishop of the new see of Sherborne, which covered the western part of Wessex beyond Selwood, while remaining abbot of Malmesbury. He held the bishopric for four years. Throughout his career he composed Latin works that circulated widely: a treatise on virginity in both ornate prose and verse, dedicated to the nuns of Barking; a hundred riddles (Enigmata); a letter to King Aldfrith of Northumbria on Latin metre, scansion, and number; and various shorter poems, inscriptions, and letters. His style is marked by the elaborate, glossary-rich Latin associated with Insular scholarship. He was among the earliest English authors to write substantial quantitative Latin verse and helped establish a tradition of Latin learning in Wessex.

Aldhelm died on 25 May 709 at Doulting in Somerset during a visitation of his diocese. His body was taken to Malmesbury Abbey for burial. Veneration of him as a saint began soon afterwards; Bede already treated him as a figure of holy reputation, and in the ninth century King Æthelwulf of Wessex is recorded as having translated his relics. His principal feast is 25 May. He is remembered as a confessor and bishop, as the great abbot of Malmesbury, and as a founder of scholarly and monastic life in early medieval Wessex. The standing Anglo-Saxon church of St Laurence at Bradford-on-Avon has long been associated with his building work, though the present fabric dates from a later period.
