Biography

Short Description

Saint Amandus, also known as Amand of Maastricht and Amand of Elnon, was a seventh-century missionary bishop venerated as the Apostle of Flanders. He was born in the late sixth century near Nantes in Lower Poitou, in western Gaul, to a family of noble rank. Over the opposition of his father he entered monastic life, first on the island of Yeu and later at Bourges, where Bishop Austregisilus received him. At Bourges he lived for about fifteen years in eremitical austerity and was ordained priest. A subsequent pilgrimage to Rome is recorded in his early Life; the same source presents this journey as the occasion on which he received a mandate to preach among pagan peoples.

Upon his return he devoted himself to missionary work in the Scheldt basin and in Flanders, territories that remained largely unconverted in the early seventh century. He met both conversions and violent resistance. He founded or helped to found several monasteries that served as centers of evangelization, notably Elnon (later Saint-Amand-les-Eaux) on the Scarpe, and communities at Ghent associated with Saint Peter (Blandinium) and with Saint Bavo, whom he is said to have tonsured. He also preached in Gascony among the Basques and, at the instance of the Merovingian court, undertook a mission toward the Danube. Around the middle of the seventh century he was appointed bishop of Maastricht. The appointment proved difficult; conflict with local clergy and the character of the see led him to resign after a relatively short tenure and to resume itinerant preaching.

Amandus appears in connection with the courts of Dagobert I and Sigebert III. Hagiographical tradition reports that he rebuked royal immorality and suffered a period of exile in consequence, and that he advocated the liberation of captives and slaves. In his later years he retired to Elnon, placing the community under his disciple Baudemundus, who is named as the original author of his Life. He died at Elnon on 6 February in the later seventh century; the years 675, 679, and 684 are all found in the tradition. He was buried at the abbey he had founded. His cult is of early date and belongs to the pre-congregational period of recognition of saints. The abbey of Saint-Amand became an important Carolingian house, and his relics remained a focus of devotion in northern France and the Low Countries.

Amandus lived as a monk and missionary bishop and is not recorded as having married or had children. He held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see. He is commemorated on 6 February. Devotion to him has been especially strong in Flanders and at Maastricht. He is invoked as patron of brewers, innkeepers, bartenders, vintners and wine merchants, and merchants more generally, and against hernia, gout, paralysis, rheumatism, fever, and certain nervous and cattle diseases. The principal narrative source remains the Vita Amandi, whose core is associated with Baudemundus and which was later expanded; like other Merovingian lives it mixes historical outline with conventional miracle stories, so that many precise details of chronology and itinerary cannot be independently confirmed.
