Biography

Short Description

Saint Amator (also known in French as Amâtre or Amateur) was bishop of Auxerre in late Roman Gaul and is venerated as a confessor. His feast is kept on 1 May. Firm contemporary evidence for his life is limited. The principal early witness is the Life of Germanus of Auxerre written by Constantius of Lyon around 480, which names Amator as Germanus’s immediate predecessor. Fuller stories of his origins, marriage, and miracles appear only in later medieval vitae and must be treated as hagiographical tradition rather than independently verified history.

Those later accounts present him as a native of Auxerre, born to a family of senatorial rank. He is said to have married a woman named Martha and to have lived with her in continence by mutual consent. After her death he received holy orders. Around 388 he succeeded Valerian as bishop of Auxerre. Tradition credits him with building or restoring churches, including a basilica in honour of the martyr Symphorian, and with efforts to suppress remaining pagan practices in the territory of the see.

The episode that can be tied most closely to an early source is his confrontation with Germanus. Germanus, then a high-ranking Gallo-Roman official and hunter, displayed the trophies of the chase on a tree associated with pre-Christian cult. Amator had the tree cut down. When Germanus reacted with anger, Amator, already sensing that his own death was near, tonsured him, ordained him deacon, and designated him as successor. Amator died soon afterwards, traditionally on 1 May 418, and Germanus was consecrated bishop of Auxerre in his place.

Amator’s cult remained local and was closely bound to that of Germanus. He is remembered as a confessor-bishop, not a martyr. A precise year of birth, the exact site of his first burial, and many later miracle stories cannot be confirmed from sources that meet a strict historical standard. Later legend sometimes confused or identified him with other holy men named Amator or Amadour, including the hermit of Rocamadour; those identifications are not supported by early evidence.
