Biography

Short Description

Saint Aunarius (also rendered Aunacharius, Anacharius, or, in French, Aunaire) was a Merovingian bishop of Auxerre, commemorated in the Latin church as a confessor. He belonged to a family of senatorial rank associated with the city of Orléans in sixth-century Gaul. Surviving notices do not preserve a securely attested year of birth, and later round figures sometimes offered for his nativity are estimates rather than documented dates. As a young man he was placed at the court of Guntram, king of the Burgundian Franks, a usual path of advancement for aristocrats of his class. There he received the literary and administrative formation typical of the Frankish palatine milieu before turning from secular service to the clerical state.

He was ordained priest by Saint Syagrius, bishop of Autun. In 572 the church of Auxerre elected him bishop in succession to Etherius. Auxerre was an ancient see in northern Burgundy, already distinguished in the fifth century by bishops such as Germanus. Aunarius’s episcopate lasted until the early seventh century and unfolded during the reigns of Guntram and his successors, a period in which Gallic bishops regularly assembled in councils, often with royal encouragement, to legislate for clerical discipline and to define the church’s place in Frankish society.

Aunarius attended the Council of Paris in 573 and the Councils of Mâcon held in 581 and 585. Those gatherings treated simony, the protection of church property, the conduct of clergy, and the observance of Sunday and feast days. Within his own diocese he summoned a synod, commonly placed by historians in the later 570s, whose surviving canons—several dozen in number—regulate the behavior of priests, residual pagan practices among the laity, marriage discipline, and liturgical custom. The statutes of Auxerre remain an important witness to pastoral conditions in a sixth-century Gallic diocese.

He also took an interest in the historical and liturgical memory of his see. Later tradition, drawing especially on the ninth-century Gesta pontificum Autissiodorensium, credits him with promoting the recording of the acts of earlier bishops of Auxerre and with instituting the recitation of a martyrology and of the names of deceased prelates. Such measures belong to a wider Merovingian effort to stabilize cult, commemoration, and episcopal succession. No extensive medieval legend cycle attached itself to him.

Aunarius died at Auxerre on 25 September 603 and was buried in the basilica associated with Saint Germanus. His name entered the local liturgical calendar and, in due course, the Roman Martyrology, which lists him on 25 September as bishop and confessor. Modern knowledge of his life depends chiefly on conciliar subscriptions, the canons of Auxerre, and the later episcopal gesta of the diocese. He is therefore best understood as a representative reforming bishop of the Frankish church in the second half of the sixth century rather than as a figure of popular miracle stories. Precise details of his family names, any possible earlier marriage, and the exact year of his birth remain sparsely documented.
