Biography

Short Description

The name Anastasius, derived from the Greek Anastasios meaning resurrection, was common among bishops, monks, and martyrs of the late antique and early medieval Church. The title Confessor denotes a saint who suffered exile, imprisonment, torture, or public humiliation for orthodox doctrine yet did not die a violent martyr's death. Because no Wikidata identifier or Wikipedia URL has been supplied, it is not possible to determine which historical person is meant by Confessor Anastasius. Several candidates appear in the Greek synaxaria, the Roman Martyrology, and later hagiographical collections; none can be identified with certainty.

One frequently cited confessor of this name is Anastasius I, Patriarch of Antioch in the sixth century. A monk before his elevation, he occupied the see from 559. Near the end of the reign of Emperor Justinian I, the emperor sought to impose aphthartodocetism, the teaching that Christ's body was incorruptible even before the Resurrection. Anastasius refused the imperial edict, was deposed, and remained in exile for more than twenty years. He was restored under Emperor Maurice and died in 599 while still patriarch. Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic calendars commemorate him on 20 April or 21 April. His prolonged banishment qualifies him as a confessor. Precise information about his birthplace, family, and burial is lacking in surviving sources.

A second well-attested figure is Anastasius of Sinai, also called Anastasius Sinaita, a seventh-century abbot of the monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai. He is remembered as a theologian and polemicist whose principal work, the Hodegos (Guide), together with collections of questions and answers and sermons, defends the two-nature Christology of the Council of Chalcedon against Monophysite and Monothelite opponents. He appears to have died sometime after the year 700. His feast is observed on 21 April, the same day often assigned to the Antiochene patriarch, and medieval copyists sometimes confused or combined the two men. Whether Anastasius of Sinai himself underwent physical persecution sufficient to earn the title Confessor is not clearly stated in the earliest accounts; he is more commonly remembered as a monastic writer and abbot.

Other bearers of the name include a priest or monk Anastasius who was a close disciple of Saint Maximus the Confessor. Together with Maximus and another companion also named Anastasius (the papal apocrisiarius), he was arrested in the 650s, tried at Constantinople for opposing the Monothelite policy of Emperor Constans II, subjected to mutilation, and exiled to Lazica on the eastern Black Sea, where he died. Local martyrologies further record an Anastasius, bishop of Pavia, who abandoned Arianism for the Catholic faith in the seventh century and is styled confessor, as well as various abbots and monks of the eighth-century iconoclast period who were imprisoned or exiled for venerating images. In the absence of a distinctive feast day, a known burial site, or an external identifier, none of these lives can be attached with confidence to the subject Confessor Anastasius. Birth year, exact places of birth and death, patronage, and the name of any canonizing authority therefore remain unknown.
