Biography

Short Description

Antoninus of Florence, born Antonio Pierozzi in 1389 in Florence, was a Dominican friar, moral theologian, and archbishop, later venerated as a confessor-saint. He was the son of Niccolò Pierozzi, a Florentine notary, and was of small stature, which accounts for the diminutive form of his name. In his mid-teens he sought to enter the Order of Preachers. After an initial refusal on account of delicate health, he was received through the influence of the Observant Dominican reformer Giovanni Dominici and entered the convent of Santa Maria Novella. He made profession, was ordained, and became known for personal austerity, study, and administrative skill within the Observant reform of the order.

As a Dominican of the Observance he served as prior of several houses, among them Cortona, Fiesole, Naples, and the convent of San Marco in Florence, which Cosimo de' Medici had rebuilt and which Fra Angelico decorated. He was appointed vicar of the Tuscan Congregation of Observants and worked to restore regular discipline. His principal theological work, the Summa moralis (Summa theologica moralis), became a widely used handbook of moral theology and casuistry in the later Middle Ages and the early modern period. He also wrote a world chronicle (Chronicon or Summa historialis) and treatises and sermons on economic ethics, including questions of usury, just price, and the duties of merchants and rulers.

In 1446 Pope Eugene IV named him Archbishop of Florence, an office he accepted only under obedience. As archbishop he was noted for simplicity of life, visitation of the diocese, reform of the clergy, and large-scale charity. He supported or helped establish institutions for the poor, including the Buonomini di San Martino, a lay confraternity that distributed alms with discretion. He advised the Florentine government and the Medici while remaining independent in pastoral matters, and he dealt with the lingering consequences of the Council of Florence and with the reform of religious houses in his province.

Antoninus died in Florence on 2 May 1459 and was buried in the church of San Marco. Popular veneration began soon after his death. He was canonized by Pope Adrian VI on 31 May 1523. His feast has traditionally been kept on 2 May, the anniversary of his death (in some later calendars it was observed on 10 May). He remains closely associated with the city and archdiocese of Florence and in some traditions is invoked against fever. His moral and historical writings continued to be printed and consulted for centuries after his death.
