Biography

Short Description

Saint Bavo, known also as Allowin, Bavon, and Bavonius, was a seventh-century Frankish nobleman venerated as a confessor. The principal source for his life is the Vita Sancti Bavonis, a hagiographical text composed in the ninth century at Ghent, long after the events it recounts. According to this tradition he belonged to the aristocracy of Brabant or of the Hesbaye, in the northeastern part of the Frankish realm of Austrasia, in territory that now lies in Belgium. His youth is portrayed as that of a typical secular magnate: he is said to have lived comfortably, to have hunted, and to have shown little interest in religion. The falcon that later became his emblem in sculpture and painting alludes to this aristocratic and sporting past.

Tradition holds that Bavo married a woman of comparable rank and that the couple had a daughter. The death of his wife marked a turning point. Later writers connect his conversion with Saint Amand, the missionary bishop who worked in Flanders and founded monasteries along the Scheldt. Moved by preaching and by remorse, Bavo gave away his possessions to the poor, accepted tonsure, and entered the monastic community that Amand had established at Ganda, the early settlement at the junction of the Scheldt and the Lys rivers, from which the city of Ghent would grow. The community followed the mixed monastic customs of the seventh-century mission rather than a single later religious order.

After some time among the monks, Bavo sought a stricter solitude. He withdrew to the neighboring forest and lived as a hermit, in some versions of the legend occupying a hollow tree or a small cell built for him. There he passed his remaining years in prayer, fasting, and penance. He died at Ghent in the middle of the seventh century; medieval and modern calendars commonly assign the year 653 or 654, though the date is conventional rather than independently documented. He was buried at the monastery, which in time took his name and became the Abbey of Saint Bavo. His tomb was honored locally, and by the high Middle Ages he was firmly established as the patron of Ghent. When the medieval parish church of Saint John became the cathedral of the new diocese in the sixteenth century, it was rededicated to Saint Bavo; the present Saint Bavo's Cathedral still houses the famous Ghent Altarpiece and remains the center of his cult in the city. Haarlem in Holland likewise took Bavo as patron, and both the medieval Grote Kerk and the later Catholic cathedral there bear his name.

Saint Bavo's feast day is 1 October, the date under which he appears in the Roman Martyrology as a confessor at Ghent in Flanders. He is patron of the city and diocese of Ghent, of Haarlem, and, because of his iconography, of falconers. He is typically shown as a nobleman or as a hermit, often with a falcon on his wrist, sometimes with a sword, and occasionally beside a tree or a stone coffin. No contemporary charters name him, and modern historians treat the narrative of his conversion and eremitical life as pious legend shaped in the Carolingian period to honor Ghent's monastic origins. Even so, the cult is ancient in the Low Countries, and his figure as a penitent aristocrat who abandoned wealth for solitude has remained a stable part of Flemish and Dutch religious memory.
