Biography

Short Description

Benedict Biscop, originally named Biscop Baducing, was a seventh-century Northumbrian nobleman who became a monk, abbot, and one of the principal transmitters of Roman and continental Christian culture to Anglo-Saxon England. He belonged to a family of high rank and spent his early adulthood in the household of King Oswiu of Northumbria. At about the age of twenty-five, conventionally dated to 653, he resigned his secular position and set out on pilgrimage to Rome, travelling for part of the journey with Wilfrid. This was the first of five visits to the apostolic see. The experience of Roman liturgy, architecture, and learning shaped his subsequent career.

After a second journey to Rome, Benedict received the monastic tonsure at the island abbey of Lérins in southern Gaul and took the name Benedict. In 668 he was again in Rome when Pope Vitalian consecrated Theodore of Tarsus as archbishop of Canterbury. Benedict accompanied Theodore and Abbot Hadrian to England and was placed in charge of the monastery of St Peter at Canterbury, serving as its abbot for about two years. He then returned to his native Northumbria. In 674 King Ecgfrith granted him a large estate at the mouth of the Wear, where he founded the monastery of St Peter. Determined that the church should follow Roman models, he imported stonemasons and glaziers from Gaul; the resulting stone church with glazed windows was among the earliest of its kind in England.

Around 681 or 682 Ecgfrith granted a second estate, on the Tyne at Jarrow, for a companion monastery dedicated to St Paul. Benedict intended Wearmouth and Jarrow to form a single community under one rule. He travelled repeatedly to Rome and Gaul to furnish the houses with books, relics, sacred images arranged in narrative cycles, and liturgical vessels. On one journey he obtained from Pope Agatho a privilege of protection for the monasteries. He also brought to England John, archcantor of St Peter's basilica in Rome, who taught the monks the Roman chant and the liturgical year as observed at the papal court. Benedict compiled a monastic rule from the customs of some seventeen houses he had visited, giving a central place to the Rule of Saint Benedict.

The library he assembled made Wearmouth-Jarrow a leading centre of study in the Latin West. Among those formed there was Bede, who entered the monastery in childhood and later composed the Lives of the Abbots, the chief narrative source for Benedict's career. In old age Benedict was afflicted with a progressive paralysis that lasted about three years; he continued to exhort the community to preserve the library, to elect abbots for holiness rather than birth, and to maintain the unity of the two houses. He died on 12 January 690 at Wearmouth and was buried in the church of St Peter. He has been venerated as a confessor from an early date, and his feast is observed on 12 January. His foundations, books, and insistence on Roman liturgical and artistic practice were foundational for the Northumbrian cultural flowering of the late seventh and early eighth centuries.
