Biography

Short Description

The designation Confessor Bishop Augustal does not correspond to a figure who can be identified with certainty in the principal historical and hagiographical sources of the Latin or Greek churches. No entry under this exact name appears in the Roman Martyrology, the major medieval legendaries, or the standard Eastern synaxaria. The name may be a shortened or vernacular rendering of the Latin Augustalis, a name borne by a fifth-century bishop of Toulon in southern Gaul, but that identification remains conjectural in the absence of a matching vita or a liturgical notice that actually uses the form Augustal.

A bishop Augustalis of Toulon (ancient Telo Martius) is attested only by his subscription to the acts of two Gallic councils held in the early 440s. He was present at the Council of Orange in 441 and at the Council of Vaison in 442. Those assemblies dealt with ecclesiastical discipline, the organization of rural parishes, and the authority of metropolitans in the province of Arles. His name in the conciliar lists is the sole contemporary documentary evidence for his episcopate. No narrative source from the fifth or sixth century describes his origins, his manner of life, or the date of his death.

In later centuries the bishops of Provence were sometimes remembered locally as confessors, a title that in early Christian usage denoted a bishop or cleric who had suffered for the faith or who had simply led a holy life without dying a martyr. Whether the Toulon bishop was ever the object of a formal cult, and whether that cult employed the name Augustal, cannot be verified from surviving calendars or martyrologies of wide circulation. No reliable account records a feast day universally assigned to him, nor any patronage of places, trades, or causes.

Nothing is known of his birth, family, or education. The see of Toulon in the mid-fifth century lay within the ecclesiastical orbit of Arles and within the political world of the fading Western Roman administration and the incoming Burgundian and Visigothic powers. Beyond that general setting, the personal history of Bishop Augustalis—and still more of any figure called specifically Augustal—remains undocumented. Historians and hagiographers must therefore leave the principal biographical dates and places blank rather than supply conjectural values drawn from the year of a council or the later history of the diocese.
