Biography

Short Description

Braulio of Zaragoza (Latin Braulius Caesaraugustanus), venerated as Confessor Braulio, was a bishop, letter-writer, and hagiographer of Visigothic Hispania in the first half of the seventh century. He was born in Zaragoza (Roman Caesaraugusta) in the later sixth century into a prominent local family already closely tied to the Church. His brother John served as bishop of Zaragoza before him; another brother, Fronimian, became an abbot; and his sisters Pomponia and Basilla entered religious life. Braulio received his early formation in Zaragoza and later studied in Seville under Isidore, the metropolitan of that see. The association with Isidore shaped his learning and his later role in circulating Isidore’s works, especially the Etymologiae, which Braulio is traditionally credited with dividing into books and helping to disseminate.

After returning north he served as archdeacon under Bishop John. On John’s death in 631 Braulio succeeded him as bishop of Zaragoza, remaining in that office until his own death. As bishop he took part in the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Councils of Toledo, which dealt with doctrine, royal and ecclesiastical discipline, and the organization of the Visigothic Church. His surviving correspondence—some forty letters—shows him as a pastoral administrator, a literary man, and an occasional counselor in the affairs of the Visigothic court, including under King Chindasuinth. The letters also document his friendship with Isidore and his concern for orthodoxy, clerical conduct, and the cult of local saints.

Braulio’s principal original work is a Life of Saint Aemilian (San Millán de la Cogolla), the Riojan hermit, together with a hymn in that saint’s honor. These texts, along with the letters, are among the last substantial monuments of Latin letters in Visigothic Spain before the Muslim conquest of the early eighth century. He died in Zaragoza in 651 and was soon commemorated as a confessor rather than a martyr. The Roman Martyrology assigns his feast to 26 March. Later devotion in Aragon associated him with learning; the University of Zaragoza in particular has long regarded him as its patron, keeping his feast as a university celebration. Precise details of his burial and of any formal papal canonization are not securely attested; his cult belongs to the early, locally rooted veneration of a scholar-bishop of the Visigothic Church.
