Biography

Short Description

Saint Raymond Nonnatus, venerated in the Catholic Church as a confessor, is a Catalan religious of the thirteenth century associated with the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy. The epithet Nonnatus, from the Latin for not born, refers to the traditional claim that he was brought into the world by caesarean section after his mother died in childbirth. Standard hagiographical accounts place his birth in 1204 at Portell in Catalonia, within the Crown of Aragon, and his death on 31 August 1240 at Cardona. He is commonly styled a cardinal in later liturgical books and popular devotion, though that dignity is not attested in thirteenth-century sources. The earliest substantial narratives of his life were composed centuries after the events they describe, and historians therefore distinguish a possible historical Mercedarian named Raymond from the richly elaborated legend that grew around him.

The Mercedarian Order, founded in the early thirteenth century under the patronage of Saint Peter Nolasco and with royal support in Aragon, was dedicated to the redemption of Christian captives held in Muslim territories of the western Mediterranean. According to the received vita, Raymond entered this order, embraced its fourth vow of remaining in pawn if necessary to free captives, and became one of its principal ransomers. In the context of ongoing warfare and piracy between Christian and Muslim powers in Iberia and North Africa, such redemptions were a recognized work of mercy and a source of prestige for the new order. Traditional accounts assign Raymond a period of activity in this apostolate both in Spain and overseas.

The most famous episode of the legend places him in North Africa, often specified as Algeria, where he is said to have spent all available ransom money and then given himself as a hostage so that others might go free. While detained he is described as preaching the Christian faith to fellow prisoners and to the local population. Hagiographers relate that, in order to stop his preaching, his captors bored through his lips and fastened them with a padlock, a motif that later became his principal iconographic attribute. He is said to have been redeemed at last by members of his order and to have returned to Catalonia. These captivity and torture stories follow patterns well established in the literature of the ransom orders and in medieval accounts of confessors; they are not corroborated by independent thirteenth-century evidence.

Later tradition states that Pope Gregory IX, who reigned from 1227 to 1241, named Raymond a cardinal deacon, frequently identified with the deaconry of Saint Eustace, and called him to the Roman curia. On the journey from Catalonia toward Italy he fell ill and died at the castle of Cardona. Counts of Cardona and the Mercedarians are said to have contended over his body. He was buried in the region of Cardona, and a cult of relics and pilgrimage developed, later centered also on the sanctuary at Portell, his traditional birthplace. Because contemporary papal and cardinalatial records do not list him, reference works generally present the cardinalate as a pious tradition rather than as a documented fact.

Devotion to Raymond spread especially in Spain and in territories evangelized by the Mercedarians and other Spanish orders, including parts of Latin America and the Philippines. Pope Alexander VII confirmed his cult in 1657, an act treated as canonization. His feast day is 31 August. In art he is typically shown in Mercedarian habit, sometimes with a cardinal's hat or mozzetta, and with a padlock on his lips or in his hand. Because of the manner of his birth and the silence imposed in the legend, the faithful have invoked him as patron of midwives, obstetricians, pregnant women, childbirth, newborn infants, persons who are falsely accused, and the confidentiality of the sacrament of penance. The historical kernel of his life remains modest: a thirteenth-century Catalan Mercedarian around whom a powerful late-medieval and baroque cult was formed.
