Biography

Short Description

Saint Cerbonius (Italian: San Cerbone or San Cerbonio), commemorated as a confessor, was bishop of Populonia in Tuscany in the sixth century. Hagiographical tradition holds that he was born in North Africa and that he left Africa during the persecution of Nicene Christians under the Arian Vandal kings, crossing to Italy, in some accounts together with Saint Regulus (San Regolo). He became bishop of Populonia, the ancient coastal see whose territory later overlapped the districts of Piombino and Massa Marittima. Precise dates of birth and consecration are not preserved in contemporary records; the outline of his life is known chiefly from later cult and from a near-contemporary notice by Pope Gregory the Great.

Gregory devoted a chapter of Book III of the Dialogues to Cerbonius. He relates that, in the time of the Ostrogothic king Totila, the people of Populonia accused the bishop of having sheltered a soldier. Totila had Cerbonius brought before him and ordered that a savage bear be set upon him. Instead of attacking, the animal licked the bishop’s feet. Totila, astonished, released him. This episode, presented by Gregory as a miracle, is the principal early testimony to Cerbonius’s reputation for holiness. Independent documentary confirmation of the incident does not survive, but Gregory was writing within living memory of Totila’s campaigns in Tuscany and treated Cerbonius as a known figure of the recent past.

During the Lombard invasion of the Italian peninsula in the later sixth century, Cerbonius withdrew from the mainland to the island of Elba, where tradition places his death about the year 575. His body was afterwards brought back to Populonia and, in a later translation, to Massa Marittima. There his relics are kept in the cathedral dedicated to him, the Duomo di San Cerbone, which became the centre of his cult. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 10 October at Populonia as bishop and confessor, explicitly citing Gregory’s account. He is the principal patron of Massa Marittima.

Medieval vitae added further miracles—taming of wild beasts, discovery of springs, and other wonders typical of Tuscan episcopal legend—but these elaborations are not controlled by sixth-century sources. What can be stated with caution is that an African-born bishop of Populonia named Cerbonius was remembered in Gregory’s circle for holiness and for a miraculous deliverance under Totila, that he ended his life in exile on Elba during the Lombard wars, and that a stable liturgical cult, focused on Massa Marittima, grew around his relics and feast on 10 October.
