Biography

Short Description

The heading Confessor Cyril does not correspond to one uniquely identified saint in the way that established epithets such as Maximus the Confessor or Edward the Confessor do. In Greek and Latin hagiography a confessor (homologetes, confessor) is a Christian who suffered exile, imprisonment, or public trial for the faith but was not put to death. The personal name Cyril (Greek Kyrillos) was borne by a great many bishops, monks, and teachers from late antiquity through the modern period. Older martyrologies often listed such men simply as bishop and confessor on a given day, without a see or further byname, so the bare style Confessor Cyril cannot be matched to a single life, tomb, or feast without additional evidence.

Among fourth-century bishops later honored in both East and West as confessors is Cyril of Jerusalem, who held the see of Jerusalem in the mid-fourth century and was repeatedly deposed and restored during the Arian controversies. He is associated with catechetical preaching in Jerusalem and with the defense of Nicene doctrine; later tradition numbers him among the doctors of the Church, with a customary March commemoration. A generation later, Cyril of Alexandria, nephew of Patriarch Theophilus, governed the church of Alexandria in the early fifth century and was the principal episcopal voice at the Council of Ephesus in 431. He is commemorated as a doctor of the Church; in the Coptic succession he is counted among the Popes of Alexandria. Neither figure is uniquely or customarily indexed in standard reference works under the isolated title Confessor Cyril.

In the ninth century the Constantinopolitan scholar Constantine took the monastic name Cyril and, with his brother Methodius, preached among the Slavs and developed a Slavic literary language. He died in Rome in the later ninth century and is venerated as an equal-to-the-apostles missionary rather than under the simple title of confessor. Later centuries produced further monastic and episcopal saints of the same name, including Russian founders such as Cyril of White Lake in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, various local Greek and Slavic commemorations, and, in twentieth-century Russian Orthodox calendars, new confessors named Kirill who are distinct historical persons with documented surnames and sees. None of these men is the exclusive bearer of the style Confessor Cyril.

Because no Wikidata identifier, encyclopedia article, feast date, or diocese accompanies the heading, none of the usual biographical coordinates—year of birth, places of birth or death, burial, religious order, marriage, children, papal or patriarchal office, canonizing authority, or patronages—can be verified for a unique individual. Assigning the dates or offices of Cyril of Jerusalem, Cyril of Alexandria, the apostle to the Slavs, or any later homonym would be conjecture. The present record therefore leaves those fields empty and confines itself to recording the ambiguity of the title and the principal well-documented saints among whom any intended figure would have to be sought.
