Biography

Short Description

Saint Dathus (also rendered Datus) is commemorated as a bishop and confessor of Ravenna in the Roman Martyrology on 3 July. He belongs to the group of early Italian episcopal saints whose names were preserved in local calendars and later incorporated into the general martyrology, but about whom virtually no contemporary historical evidence survives. The Martyrology simply records him at Ravenna as bishop and confessor, without further biographical detail.

In the traditional catalogue of the bishops of Ravenna, Dathus is placed among the successors of the proto-bishop Saint Apollinaris, sometimes as following Saint Proculus, and is assigned by later compilers to the later second century. That episcopal list, however, is regarded by modern historians as largely legendary for the period before the late fourth century. Like many other Western sees, Ravenna in the early Middle Ages constructed an apostolic or sub-apostolic succession in order to enhance the antiquity and prestige of the church. No inscriptions, letters, or independent chronicles confirm Dathus’s existence or dates.

Hagiographical notices describe him as a man of great holiness who shepherded the Christian community of Ravenna. He is styled a confessor rather than a martyr, indicating that tradition remembered him as one who witnessed to the faith by a holy life and pastoral ministry rather than by the shedding of blood. Later sources claim that his relics were kept in the cathedral of Ravenna, but even this detail cannot be verified from early documents.

Because of the extreme paucity of evidence, nothing reliable can be said about his birth, family, education, or the specific events of his episcopate. He left no known writings. No particular patronages, miracles, or cultic legends beyond the brief martyrological entry can be securely attached to him. His memory remained essentially local to Ravenna and did not generate a widespread medieval vita or liturgical office of any complexity.

Dathus therefore illustrates the many obscure confessor-bishops of late antique and early medieval Italy whose names were retained in the liturgy long after the historical circumstances of their lives had been forgotten. The later prominence of Ravenna as imperial capital and exarchal seat in the fifth and sixth centuries may have encouraged the preservation and embellishment of its early episcopal list, yet it does not supply the missing biographical facts for this particular saint.
