Biography

Short Description

Confessor Davin is most plausibly identified with the eleventh-century Armenian pilgrim venerated in Lucca as Saint Davinus (Italian San Davino). Traditional accounts describe him as a native of Armenia, of a family of some standing, who in adult life gave away his property and set out as a pilgrim. He is said to have visited Jerusalem and to have been traveling toward Rome and the shrine of Saint James at Compostela when illness overtook him in Tuscany. No reliable source preserves a birth year, a precise birthplace within Armenia, or a detailed account of his early life, and nothing independent of the later Lucchese tradition confirms his origin from contemporary Eastern records.

According to that tradition he died at Lucca on 3 June 1051. He had been received in the city as a poor traveler and was buried there. Reports of wonders at his grave led the local church to honor him as a confessor, a saint who had witnessed to the faith by ascetic pilgrimage rather than by martyrdom. His relics were associated with a church in Lucca that came to bear his name. The cult remained essentially local. He is not recorded as a member of a religious order, as a bishop, as pope, or as a patriarch, and there is no documentation of a wife or children.

The historical evidence is limited to medieval local tradition and later hagiographical retellings. Formal canonization by a pope in the sense later standardized by the Roman Church is not attested; recognition was episcopal and popular. Standard martyrologies and the major critical collections of saints’ lives give him only brief notice, if they mention him at all. Claims that he belonged to Armenian royalty, that his body was found incorrupt, or that he exercised a wide patronage cannot be verified from independent early sources and should be treated with caution.

He is commemorated on 3 June. Devotion to him illustrates the medieval pattern of long-distance pilgrimage from the Christian East through the Italian cities and the readiness of those cities to adopt a foreign holy man as their own. Beyond Lucca, Confessor Davin has left little trace in the wider calendars of East or West, and many of the personal details that a modern biography would require remain unknown.
