Biography

Short Description

Saint Drogo, known also as Dreux, Druon, Droon, or Drogo of Sebourg, was a Flemish hermit of the twelfth century commemorated as a confessor in the Catholic tradition. Hagiographical accounts place his birth in 1105 at Epinoy in the County of Flanders, then a territory of the Flemish nobility. He belonged to a family of local rank. His mother died while giving birth to him, an event that later writers present as the origin of a lifelong sense of guilt and of the severe penances he afterwards imposed upon himself. Left an orphan in his youth, he is said to have distributed his inheritance to the poor and, around the age of eighteen, to have taken employment as a shepherd rather than continue in the station of his birth.

For several years Drogo tended flocks, first in Flanders and subsequently in the neighbourhood of Sebourg in the County of Hainaut. He then undertook repeated pilgrimages, medieval legend asserting that he travelled to Rome as many as nine times. After these journeys he resolved to live as a recluse. A small cell was built against the exterior wall of the parish church of Saint Martin at Sebourg, and there he remained for some forty years, never leaving his enclosure. He heard the liturgy through an opening in the wall and received the Eucharist from the same window.

In later life Drogo suffered from a grave hernia or a similarly disfiguring malady. Popular memory held that his appearance became so distressing that the townspeople preferred not to look upon him, and the window between cell and church allowed him to take part in worship without being seen. His diet, according to the same tradition, consisted of barley bread and water, supplemented by Holy Communion. He thus combined the vocations of shepherd, pilgrim, and enclosed hermit, and was regarded in his own district as a living example of penitence.

Drogo died at Sebourg on 16 April 1186, a date that became his feast day. He was never canonized by a formal papal process of the kind later required by the Holy See; his cult arose by popular acclaim in Hainaut and Flanders and was accepted in local martyrologies, which list him as a confessor. His relics were kept at the church of Saint Martin in Sebourg, which developed into a modest pilgrimage site. Because of his orphanhood, his years among livestock, his physical sufferings, and later folk associations, he has been invoked as patron of shepherds, sheep and cattle, orphans, the deaf and the mute, the mentally ill, those afflicted with hernias, ruptures, gallstones, kidney stones and broken bones, midwives, persons regarded as unattractive or deformed, and, in more recent popular devotion, keepers of coffee houses.

The written evidence for Drogo’s life is late and legendary in character, as is common with many locally venerated medieval confessors. No contemporary charter or chronicle gives a detailed biography, and the precise years of birth and death rest on later liturgical and hagiographical tradition rather than on documents of the twelfth century. What can be affirmed with reasonable confidence is that a hermit named Drogo was honoured at Sebourg in Hainaut, that his feast was kept on 16 April, and that a cult centred on his tomb persisted in the region through the later Middle Ages.
