Biography

Short Description

Saint Emilian (also Aemilian or Aemilianus), commemorated in the Eastern churches as Emilian the Confessor, was Bishop of Cyzicus in the early ninth century. Cyzicus was a metropolitan see of Mysia on the southern shore of the Propontis (the Sea of Marmara) in Asia Minor, then part of the Byzantine Empire. Surviving notices say almost nothing about his birth, family, education, or the circumstances of his elevation to the episcopate. The historical record that remains is concerned with his public resistance during the second period of imperial iconoclasm, not with a full vita of his earlier years.

When Emperor Leo V the Armenian (reigned 813–820) revived the iconoclast policy that the Seventh Ecumenical Council (Nicaea II, 787) had condemned, he summoned bishops to Constantinople in order to obtain their submission. According to the synaxaria, Emilian was the first of the assembled hierarchs to refuse. He maintained that the veneration of holy icons was a question for the Church and its synods, not for decision at the imperial court. In 815 he was deposed from the see of Cyzicus and sent into confinement. The same year saw the deposition of Patriarch Nikephoros I of Constantinople and a council in the capital that repudiated Nicaea II; Emilian belongs to the group of bishops and monastic leaders who would not accept that settlement.

He remained in prison or exile for the rest of his life and died as a confessor of the faith—one who suffered for Orthodoxy without the sources recording a violent martyrdom. The exact year, place, and manner of his death are not preserved. Later liturgical texts praise his readiness to speak against imperial interference in doctrine and his endurance in bonds. He was never Bishop of Rome and never held a patriarchal or catholicosal see; Cyzicus, though an important metropolitanate, was not a patriarchate.

The Eastern Orthodox Church keeps his memory on 8 August. No reliable ancient source assigns him a particular patronage of places, professions, or causes, nor does it name a spouse, children, or a specific monastic order, although ninth-century bishops of his type were commonly taken from the monastic clergy. His cult is that of an early medieval confessor-bishop, received by liturgical tradition rather than by a later, documented process of beatification or canonization by a named pope or synod. Details of his tomb and of any local shrine at Cyzicus have not come down in the sources used for this notice.
