Biography

Short Description

Saint Eulogius of Alexandria, commemorated as a confessor of orthodox Christology, served as the Chalcedonian patriarch of Alexandria from about 580 until his death in the first decade of the seventh century. Contemporary and near-contemporary notices present him as a Syrian who had lived as a monk at Antioch before his elevation. He inherited a see whose flock was a minority in a land where the majority followed the anti-Chalcedonian Coptic hierarchy. His task was therefore both pastoral and polemical: to hold the imperial church together in Egypt and to refute Miaphysite teaching.

Eulogius wrote extensively, yet only excerpts remain, preserved mainly in the Bibliotheca of Photius. The fragments attack various Monophysite positions, the Acephali who rejected all patriarchs, and the Novatians still found in Alexandria. They also discuss the proper way to receive those returning from heresy. These writings circulated widely enough to be known in Rome. Pope Gregory the Great, in letters dated to the 590s and early 600s, repeatedly commended Eulogius's learning and orthodoxy, dispatched relics to Alexandria, and treated the patriarch as a trusted correspondent on Eastern affairs.

The length of Eulogius's patriarchate, spanning the reigns of Tiberius II, Maurice, and Phocas, indicates that he enjoyed consistent imperial support. He is credited with restoring churches and with converting or reconciling some heretics, though the scale of such successes cannot be measured from the surviving evidence. Egypt remained divided, and the Coptic church continued under its own popes. Eulogius's activity belongs to the last generations of organized Chalcedonian life in Egypt before the Persian occupation and the subsequent Arab conquest.

He died in Alexandria, according to the Roman Martyrology on 13 September, in 608 (some older authorities give 607). Both Latin and Greek churches enrolled him among the saints, though they assigned different feast days, including 13 February in some Eastern calendars. No medieval collection of miracles or widespread popular patronage is attached to his name, and the place of his burial is not recorded in the sources that survive. Historians value him chiefly as a theologian of the neo-Chalcedonian period and as a documented friend of Gregory the Great, offering a window onto relations between Rome and Alexandria at the close of antiquity.
