Biography

Short Description

Saint Eumenius, commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as a confessor and wonderworker, served as bishop of Gortyna on the island of Crete in the seventh century. Surviving accounts of his life derive from later liturgical synaxaria rather than from contemporary historical documents, and many details remain uncertain. Tradition presents him as a native of Crete who, from his youth, was distinguished by piety and an unusual degree of charity. He is said to have distributed his inherited property to the poor and to have withdrawn into monastic solitude before being called to the episcopal see of Gortyna, then one of the principal cities of Crete.

As bishop, Eumenius acquired a reputation for pastoral care of the needy and for miracles of healing. Hagiographical sources credit him with delivering a child from demonic possession and with other acts of wonderworking that earned him the epithet of Wonderworker. He is also remembered as a defender of Chalcedonian Orthodoxy during the Monothelite controversy that troubled the Byzantine Church in the mid-seventh century. According to the traditional narrative, his opposition to Monothelitism led to his being summoned before the imperial authorities and subsequently sent into exile.

The place of exile named in the sources is the Thebaid in Egypt. There, according to the same tradition, he ended his life. At a later date his relics were translated from Egypt back to Gortyna, where they became the focus of local veneration. Precise years of birth and death are not recorded; even the century, though conventionally given as the seventh, rests on the association of his confession with the Monothelite disputes rather than on dated chronicles.

Eumenius is honored on 18 September in the Orthodox liturgical calendar. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later Western type; his cult belongs to the ancient, locally rooted veneration of holy bishops and confessors. No specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are firmly attached to his name in the major martyrologies, beyond the general honor paid to him as a wonderworking hierarch of Crete.
