Biography

Short Description

Saint Exuperantius, known in Latin as Exuperantius and in Italian as Sant'Esuperanzio, is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 24 January with the title of bishop and confessor of Cingoli (the ancient Cingulum) in Picenum, corresponding to the modern province of Macerata in the Marche of central Italy. He is one of a number of local episcopal saints of late antique Italy whose names were preserved in the martyrological tradition and in a strong municipal cult, but who left no contemporary literary remains. Neither a year of birth nor a securely documented year of death has been transmitted by any early historian or inscription. Modern notices that place him in the fifth century rest on the internal chronology of a later legend and on the general historical setting of the see, not on a dated contemporary record. Dates sometimes copied in popular calendars should therefore be treated with caution.

The principal narrative source is a medieval Life which presents Exuperantius as a native of Roman North Africa. According to that account he left Africa amid the upheavals that accompanied the Vandal conquest and the difficulties then experienced by Catholics of Nicene belief, made his way to Italy, and adopted the life of a hermit in the hills near Cingoli. The holiness attributed to him in solitude led the Church of Cingoli to elect him bishop. As bishop he is portrayed as an austere and charitable pastor who sustained his people through a time of insecurity in the Italian peninsula. The Life also credits him with miracles. Because that Vita is late and uncorroborated, a careful historian can accept only the broad possibility that an African ascetic became bishop of a Picene see in the fifth century; the individual episodes remain legendary rather than documentary.

Exuperantius died at Cingoli and was buried in his city. His tomb became the centre of a local cult that has continued into modern times. The chief monument of that cult is the collegiate church of Sant'Esuperanzio, a distinguished Romanesque building of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries that stands near Cingoli and houses relics associated with the saint. He is honoured as the principal patron of Cingoli. The feast on 24 January, as given in the Roman Martyrology, is the liturgical date of widest recognition; locally the cult has also been expressed in civic observance. No papal canonization of the later formal type is recorded; his sainthood belongs to the ancient pattern of episcopal and popular veneration later ratified by inclusion in the martyrology.

Nothing historically reliable is known of his family. The portrait of a hermit raised to the episcopate implies a celibate, monastic manner of life, and no source mentions a wife or children. He was never Bishop of Rome, nor did he occupy any of the patriarchal sees of the East. Beyond the patronage of Cingoli, no wider list of patronages is securely attached to his name in the early or medieval sources. The combination of a firm liturgical and local cult with a sparse and legendary biography is typical of many Italian confessors of the fifth and sixth centuries, and it is in that context that Exuperantius is best understood.
