Biography

Short Description

Saint Exuperius, also known as Exupère, Exupery, or Exsuperius, was Bishop of Toulouse in Roman Gaul at the beginning of the fifth century. He succeeded Saint Sylvius in that see and governed the church of Toulouse during years of famine and of growing insecurity as barbarian groups entered the western provinces of the empire. No reliable evidence survives concerning his birth, family, or life before the episcopate; what is known of him comes from his correspondence with Rome, from notices by Saint Jerome, and from the later martyrological tradition that styles him bishop and confessor. His ministry belongs to the last generation of Gallic bishops who still worked within the framework of the Western Roman Empire.

Exuperius was renowned among contemporaries for combining personal austerity with exceptional charity. In a time of scarcity he sold the sacred vessels of his church in order to feed the hungry and to support the poor and the clergy of his diocese. Saint Jerome, who dedicated his commentary on the prophet Zechariah to Exuperius, praised the bishop for having emptied the treasury of the church of Toulouse for the relief of those in need, so that virtually nothing remained but a simple wooden chair. This testimony, coming from a well-informed writer in the Holy Land who was in contact with Gallic churchmen, is the chief contemporary witness to Exuperius’s reputation for self-denial and generosity.

In 405 Pope Innocent I addressed a substantial decretal letter to Exuperius in answer to questions the bishop had sent to Rome. The letter treated the canon of the Old and New Testaments, the reconciliation of lapsed Christians, the reception of converts from heretical bodies, and various points of clerical and liturgical discipline. It remains an important source for the biblical canon as recognized at Rome in the early fifth century and for papal relations with the churches of Gaul. Exuperius thus appears as a conscientious pastor seeking authoritative guidance while his region faced political collapse and the first effects of the barbarian invasions that followed the crossing of the Rhine.

The exact year of his death is not recorded in any surviving contemporary document and is conventionally given as about 411. He died at Toulouse and was venerated there as a saint from an early period. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 28 September, recalling his charity toward the poor and his zeal for the faith. Later medieval accounts add little that can be verified independently. The historical figure of Exuperius therefore rests on a small but solid set of early fifth-century notices: a bishop of Toulouse whose charity impressed Jerome, whose canonical questions elicited a major letter from Innocent I, and whose memory the church of Gaul preserved as that of a confessor.
