Biography

Short Description

Saint Faro, also known as Burgundofaro and in French as Saint Faron, was a Frankish nobleman of the seventh century who became Bishop of Meaux and was later venerated as a confessor. He belonged to a leading family of Burgundian origin. His father, Chagneric (also called Agneric), was a prominent courtier of King Theudebert II of Austrasia; his mother was Leodegundis. Several siblings were likewise honoured as saints: his sister Burgundofara (Saint Fara) founded and ruled the abbey of Faremoutiers; his brother Chagnoald (Saint Cagnoald) was a monk at Luxeuil under Saint Columbanus and later Bishop of Laon; a sister named Agnetrudis appears in some traditions. The family's Burgundian names, its service at the Austrasian court, and its ties to Luxeuil place Faro among the aristocratic circles that shaped Merovingian Christianity.

Hagiographical tradition holds that Faro was trained for public life and served as referendary, or chancellor, to King Dagobert I. The same tradition records that he married a noblewoman named Blidechild and that, after a time, the couple agreed to separate in order to follow religious vocations: she is said to have entered monastic life, while he received the clerical tonsure and was in due course chosen Bishop of Meaux. Contemporary charters that would confirm the marriage or fix the year of his accession do not survive, so those details must be treated with caution. That he held the see of Meaux in the mid-seventh century is, however, historically secure and is consistent with the better-documented careers of his siblings.

As bishop, Faro was a patron of the Columbanian monastic movement that had spread from Luxeuil, the house his brother had entered. He is credited with supporting or founding religious communities in and around Meaux, including the house later known as the Abbey of Saint-Faron, and with receiving missionary monks. His episcopate belongs to the period when Merovingian bishops combined pastoral charge with royal connections and with Irish-influenced monastic reform. Beyond this general pattern, specific pastoral acts are poorly documented, because the principal narrative source—a vita composed in the ninth century by Bishop Hildegar of Meaux—is late and partly legendary.

Traditional accounts place Faro's death at Meaux on 28 October 672, though some modern notices prefer a date around 675. He was buried locally. The church and monastery that took his name preserved his relics and cult through the Middle Ages until the French Revolution, when the Abbey of Saint-Faron was suppressed and largely destroyed. His feast on 28 October was recorded in medieval martyrologies, and he was honoured as a confessor rather than a martyr. The cult remained essentially regional, centred on Meaux and neighbouring Neustria. A careful reading therefore distinguishes the historical seventh-century bishop from the fuller portrait drawn by Carolingian hagiography, while still recognizing Faro's place among the sainted bishops of the Merovingian church.
