Biography

Short Description

Gaugericus, known in French as Géry and in Dutch as Gorik, was a Gallo-Roman cleric of the late sixth and early seventh centuries who became bishop of Cambrai and was later venerated as a confessor-saint. He was born at Eposium in the Ardennes, a place later called Yvois and now Carignan, then within the Frankish kingdom and in the orbit of the diocese of Trier. His early Latin vita names his parents as Gaudentius and Austadiola. While still a young man he came to the attention of Magneric, bishop of Trier and a disciple of Saint Nicetius. Tradition holds that Magneric was struck by the young man’s command of the Psalms and ordained him deacon. In the later sixth century, during the reign of the Austrasian king Childebert II, Gaugericus was raised to the episcopal see of Cambrai, a large northern Frankish diocese whose territory then covered much of what is now northern France and parts of present-day Belgium.

As bishop he was remembered for pastoral work in a region where pagan custom had not wholly disappeared. Hagiographical tradition credits him with destroying idols and converting remaining pagan sites to Christian use, and with founding or endowing churches in his diocese. He was especially associated with the ransoming of captives, a typical work of mercy in Merovingian Gaul, where warfare regularly produced prisoners and enslaved persons. At Cambrai he built a church originally dedicated to Saint Médard, in which he was later buried and which in time took his own name. Precise years for his birth, consecration, and death are not securely documented in contemporary records; they are inferred from the length of his episcopate, from the reign of Childebert II, and from later martyrological tradition, and modern notices therefore differ.

Gaugericus is closely tied to the early Christian topography of Brussels. According to tradition he established a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter on an island in the river Senne. A settlement grew around that oratory, and the island and the later church of Saint-Géry (Sint-Goriks) preserved his name; the Place Saint-Géry in Brussels still commemorates him. Although the medieval city of Brussels took Saints Michael and Gudula as its principal patrons, Gaugericus remained an important figure in accounts of the city’s Christian origins and in local devotion. Churches and place-names dedicated to him are found in northern France and in the southern Low Countries.

He died at Cambrai, traditionally on 11 August in the early seventh century, after an episcopate of several decades, and was buried in the church of Saint Médard which he had founded there. A Latin vita was composed within a few generations of his death, and his cult was established at Cambrai and in neighbouring parts of Francia. The Roman Martyrology records him on 11 August as bishop and confessor at Cambrai in Belgic Gaul. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a confessor, that is, a saint who was not a martyr, and he is the patron of Cambrai. Later demolition and rebuilding of churches dedicated to him, including the loss of the old church of Saint-Géry in Brussels in the revolutionary period, affected the material traces of his cult, but his feast on 11 August and his association with Cambrai and with the Senne island at Brussels remained the core of his historical memory.
