Biography

Short Description

Saint Guy of Anderlecht (also known as Guido, Guidon, or Wye) is a medieval confessor saint of Brabant in the Low Countries, in the region of present-day Belgium. Contemporary records of his life do not survive; the outline of his story comes from later hagiographical tradition and from the cult that formed around his tomb. According to that tradition he was born of poor parents in the countryside of Brabant around the middle of the tenth century. An exact year of birth is not preserved. He is described as a farm laborer of little formal education who was nonetheless devout, charitable to the poor, and drawn to the service of the church.

He obtained the post of sacristan at the church of Our Lady in Anderlecht, near Brussels. There he cared for the building and its furnishings and lived a simple, frugal life. Legend holds that he saved what he could from modest wages in order to go on pilgrimage, and that money he had set aside was lost through the misfortune or failure of someone to whom he had entrusted it. He is said to have accepted the loss without bitterness and to have continued in humble work. These anecdotal episodes belong to the later vita and cannot be independently verified.

He subsequently made pilgrimages to Rome and to Jerusalem, traveling as a poor lay pilgrim rather than as a cleric or a member of a religious order. The journeys were long and physically severe. After returning to Brabant he again took up manual labor and remained attached to the church at Anderlecht. Weakened by hardship and illness, he died at Anderlecht in 1012. The date traditionally assigned to his death, and later to his feast, is 12 September.

Miracles reported at his grave, including healings of people and of animals, established a local cult. His relics were later translated and enshrined in the church at Anderlecht, known as the Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Guidon. He was venerated as a confessor, the term used for saints who were not martyrs. He was a layman, not a bishop, and was neither pope nor patriarch. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense is not recorded; his recognition as a saint rests on long-standing diocesan and popular veneration. He is invoked as patron of Anderlecht, of sacristans, laborers, and bachelors, of horned cattle and horses, and against rabies, mad dogs, epilepsy, and convulsions in children. Many details in the later legends remain historically uncertain.
