Biography

Short Description

Honoratus of Arles, commemorated in the Western church as a bishop and confessor, was a leading monastic founder and metropolitan of late-Roman Gaul. He was born in the north of Gaul in the middle of the fourth century into a family of consular rank that remained pagan. He received a classical education typical of the senatorial aristocracy. In youth he accepted Christianity, against family expectation, and adopted an ascetic life. With his brother Venantius and the hermit Caprasius he left Gaul for the East, intending to visit the monastic settlements of Greece and Egypt. Venantius died at Methone in the Peloponnese. Honoratus and Caprasius then returned to southern Gaul and lived as hermits in the hills near Fréjus before settling on a small Mediterranean island in the Lérins group, later called Île Saint-Honorat.

There, around the beginning of the fifth century, Honoratus established a monastery that combined Eastern eremitical practice with a communal discipline suited to the Gallic church. Lérins rapidly became one of the most influential monastic centres in the West. It attracted men of education and produced a number of future bishops. Honoratus governed the community as abbot and formed disciples, among them his kinsman Hilary, who later succeeded him at Arles and wrote the principal contemporary account of his life. The island monastery remained a school of bishops and a channel for Eastern ascetic ideas into Gaul for generations after its founder’s death.

In about 426 Honoratus was elected bishop of Arles, then a major metropolitan see in southern Gaul, despite his wish to remain in the cloister. His episcopate was short. He sought to restore clerical discipline and to extend monastic ideals within the diocese. He died at Arles in 429 and was buried there. Soon afterward Hilary of Arles delivered the Sermo de vita Sancti Honorati, which is the chief near-contemporary source and already treats him as a saint. Later medieval lives add legendary material that cannot be controlled by earlier evidence.

Honoratus was venerated from the fifth century as a confessor-bishop and monastic founder. His feast is kept on 16 January. Precise year and place of birth are not recorded; the outline of his career rests on Hilary’s sermon and on the subsequent reputation of Lérins. He should not be confused with other Gallic saints of the same name, notably Honoratus of Amiens, a later bishop whose cult and patronages are distinct. Relics associated with Honoratus of Arles were later claimed by both Arles and the island monastery that bears his name.
