Biography

Short Description

Saint Honoré, also known as Honoratus of Amiens, is venerated in the Latin Church as a bishop and confessor associated with the see of Amiens in northern Gaul during the Merovingian period, conventionally placed in the sixth century. Later medieval tradition names Port-le-Grand in Ponthieu as his birthplace and describes him as the son of a family of local rank. No contemporary chronicle, episcopal list of unimpeachable date, or Merovingian charter records the year of his birth, and modern historians therefore treat even the century of his life as an approximation based on the shape of his cult rather than on a dated document. Hagiographical accounts state that he was destined for the clergy from youth, that he received ordination at Amiens, and that he eventually succeeded to the bishopric; the names given for his consecrator or predecessor belong to the same sparsely documented era and cannot be independently confirmed.

The medieval life of Honoré is a late composition and is filled with miracle stories that cannot be verified from sixth-century evidence. The best-known of these, endlessly repeated in bakers' guild lore, tells that a woman of his household—often identified as his former nurse—refused to believe he would become a bishop unless a baker's peel planted in the earth should take root and blossom. The peel is said to have flowered, after which she acknowledged his calling. Other wonders of healing, of protection, and of miraculous provision were attached to his memory as the cult grew. These narratives are characteristic of high-medieval episcopal hagiography and should be read as expressions of local devotion rather than as recoverable biography. What can be said with caution is that Amiens claimed a holy bishop of this name whose tomb became a centre of pilgrimage.

Liturgical calendars commemorate him on 16 May. Traditional notices often place his death about the year 600, but other compilations offer different years in the sixth or early seventh century, and no contemporary obituary fixes the date. He was buried at Amiens. A solemn translation of relics in 1060 greatly enhanced the shrine's prestige. Portions of the relics were later conveyed to Paris, where a parish church and the well-known Faubourg Saint-Honoré took his name. In the French capital the bakers' and pastry cooks' guilds adopted him as their patron, keeping his feast with processions and the blessing of bread; that professional cult, more than any early text, explains why his name remains familiar in France. The cathedral of Amiens continued to be regarded as the principal resting place of his body.

Because of the blossoming-peel legend and the Parisian guild devotion, Honoré is invoked as patron of bakers, pastry chefs, confectioners, millers, and flour merchants, and he is also counted among the patrons of Amiens. His cult is of the ancient type that predates the later papal processes of beatification and canonization; no pope of the second millennium formally canonized him. Scholarship regards the detailed biography as largely legendary while accepting that a bishop of Amiens named Honoratus (Honoré) was venerated as a confessor from an early period, that his feast on 16 May is well established in the medieval West, and that the endurance of his name in French topography and in the piety of baking trades is the most tangible trace of his historical memory.
