Biography

Short Description

Saint Hospitius (also known as Hospice, Hospitus, or Sospis) was a sixth-century Christian recluse who lived in a ruined tower in the territory of Nice, on the Mediterranean coast of Gaul. Nearly all that can be said of him with historical confidence comes from Gregory of Tours, who devoted Book VI, chapter 6 of the History of the Franks to the hermit and also noticed him in the Glory of the Confessors. Gregory, writing within a few years of the events he describes, presents Hospitius as a man of extreme austerity who wore an iron chain next to the skin and lived on bread and a few dates. Neither Gregory nor any other early source records the year or place of his birth. A later tradition that he originated in Egypt is not found in the sixth-century narrative and cannot be verified.

Hospitius was already known in the region for prophecy when the Lombards, who had recently established a kingdom in Italy, raided Provence in 574. Gregory reports that the hermit foretold the invasion, declaring that the enemy would lay waste the countryside but would be able to seize him only insofar as God allowed, and that one of the warriors would be converted. When Lombard soldiers found the emaciated, chained figure in the tower, they took him for a criminal confined there as punishment. One raised a sword to kill him; the soldier’s arm became rigid. Hospitius signed the limb with the cross and restored it. The healed man abandoned arms and, according to Gregory, later received clerical office.

Toward the end of his life Hospitius continued to announce coming events, including his own death. He sent for a priest from a neighboring church in order to receive the last sacraments. After a fever he died. Those who prepared his body found that the iron chain had eaten deeply into his flesh. On the basis of the placement of Gregory’s chapter among the events of 581, his death is traditionally dated to that year. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 21 May as a confessor distinguished for abstinence and the spirit of prophecy. He was buried near the tower that had been his cell, on the peninsula now called Cap Ferrat or Cap Saint-Hospice, east of Nice.

No formal papal canonization, in the later medieval or modern sense, is recorded; Hospitius belongs to the holy men of late antiquity whose cult arose from local veneration. A chapel dedicated to him was eventually built on the site of the hermitage, and the headland itself took his name. Relics associated with him have been claimed by churches in the diocese of Nice. Beyond Gregory’s portrait, later hagiography added legendary details that cannot be controlled by early evidence. What remains historically secure is the figure of a Merovingian-era recluse on the Provençal coast, whose iron chain, prophetic warnings, and encounter with the Lombards were already being recounted by a well-informed Gallic bishop within a generation of his death.
